JIM DETERS UPDATE
KINSTON, NC -- 2005 Calvin College graduate Jim Deters continues to excel for the Kinston Indians - an advanced Class A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians.
Heading into a weekend series with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Deters is 4-2 for Kinston with an impressive 1.91 earned run average that leads the Kinston pitching staff among players who have tossed at least 20 innings this year.
Also a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School, Deters has appeared in 15 games including 14 in relief. In his lone starting assignment of the year for the Kinston Indians, Deters went five innings, struck out four and walked one in gaining the win in an 8-2 victory against the Winston-Salem Warthogs.
Deters has accumulated 33 innings of work for Kinston this year, has struck out 19 batters and walked just nine. He has allowed 34 hits with opponents holding a .258 batting average against him. Over his last eight appearances, Deters has allowed just two earned runs.
Earlier this spring, Deters was called up for one game for an emergency spot start for the Triple A Buffalo Bisons and was then returned back to Kinston after the start.
In his most recent appearance, coming on June 5 against the Wilmington Blue Rocks, Deters picked up the win in relief, tossing a pair of shutout innings as his club picked up a 3-1 victory.
The Kinston Indians are a member of the Carolina League and are currently in first place of the league's southern division with an overall record of 37-22. The Indians are the defending Carolina League champions.
Heading into tonight, Kinston has won eight of its last nine games.
