Siebenschein Named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American;
Men's Tennis Team Ranked 21st In Final Division ITA Division III Rankings

SIEBENSCHEIN NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN

Calvin College has added another name to its lengthy list of ESPN the Magazine
Academic All-Americans ® as Rafael Siebenschein has been so honored in the
men’s at-large college division.

A four year member of the Calvin men’s tennis team, Siebenschein has been
named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America third team in the at-large
division which includes the sports of swimming, field hockey, lacrosse, tennis,
water polo and ice hockey.

The award is indeed significant for Siebenschein as he is one of only 45 male
athletes selected as ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans in the college
division which represents a broad spectrum of more than 750 colleges or
universities at the NCAA II, III and NAIA levels.

Siebenschein is also the first tennis player (male or female) in Calvin
history to be named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American. In addition, he
is one of three MIAA athletes to be so honored as Olivet swimmer Dustin Meisner
and Albion tennis player Neil Forster have both been named to the (at-large)
first team.

Siebenschein is a native of Wurenlos, Switzerland. He graduated from Lynden
Christian High School. He also graduated from Calvin this spring with a double
major of computer science and economics while carrying a 3.85 grade point
average.

A member of the Calvin men's tennis team, Siebenschein was a four-time second
team All-MIAA selection while playing at No. 2 and No. 3 singles during his
career. Siebenschein was the MIAA runner-up at No. 2 singles in 2006 and the
MIAA runner-up at No. 3 singles in 2005. This spring, he was 20-3 at No. 3
singles.

He is the Calvin career leader in victories with a combined won-loss total of
128-34 including a career singles mark of 66-15 and a doubles mark of 62-19.
This year, he helped the Calvin men's tennis team reach the NCAA III Tournament
for the first time since 1996 as the Knights advanced to the second round.
Siebenschein picked up singles wins in Calvin's first and second round NCAA III
Tournament matches and finished the season with a 10-match win streak.

An ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2005 and 2006, Siebenschein has also been a
three-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll.

The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America teams are selected by the College
Sports Information Director's Association of America (CoSIDA). To be eligible
for nomination, an individual must be a starter or a key reserve with a minimum
cumulative GPA of 3.20. In addition, student-athletes must have completed one
full academic year at their respective institutions.

ESPN the Magazine - winner of the 2003 National Magazine Award for General

sports.
 
Calvin has now had its athletes receive CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades
70 times including 44 in the last 10 years.

MEN'S TENNIS RANKED 21st IN FINAL ITA DIVISION THREE RANKINGS

For the first time in school history, the Calvin men's tennis team has cracked
the Top-25 of the ITA Division III Rankings.

Calvin is ranked 21st in the final ITA Division III poll of the year, released
yesterday afternoon. The complete poll can be found on-line at:

The Knights are also ranked fifth in the final ITA Division III Central Region
rankings. In addition, the Calvin doubles tandem of junior Ricky Tilton (Gap,
Pa.) and sophomore Marcus Zeilstra (Oak Brook, IL) have been ranked 24th
nationally and sixth in the Central Region. Tilton is ranked 15th individuall
in the final Central Region rankings. The final Central Region rankings can be

Under the direction of fourth-year head coach John Ross, Calvin finished the
2006-07 season with an overall record of 18-6, establishing a Calvin
single-season record for victories. The Knights took second in the final MIAA
standings and then received an at-large bid to the NCAA III Tournament -
Calvin's first since 1996. The Knights then defeated Ohio Northern University
in the first round and then fell to eventual national quarterfinalist
Washington University (Mo.) in the second round.
