CALVIN WEEKEND SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 29, 2007
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD WRAP-UP FROM HILLSDALE RELAYS
HILLSDALE -- The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up
three days of competition at the Hillsdale Relays on Saturday night. Over the
three days of competition, Calvin turned in several season-best and NCAA III
provisional or automatic qualifying performances.
On the women's side, Calvin turned in five NCAA III automatic qualifying
performances with senior Lisa Winkle (South Christian HS) having a hand in
three of the five and junior Sarah Wittingen (East Grand Rapids HS) and
sophomore Lauren Bergstrom (Rochester, MN) accounting for two of the five.
Winkle had NCAA III automatic qualifying performances in the long jump (19-0
1/2) and 400 meters (55.78) while also anchoring Calvin's 4x400 meter relay
team to an NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 3:47.26. Winkle was joined on
the relay by Bergstrom, Wittingen and freshman Jourdan Johnson (Gales Ferry,
CT). In the 400 meter hurdles, Wittingen took first place with an NCAA III
automatic qualifying time of 1:01:16 while also clocking in with an NCAA III
provisional qualifying time of 14.66 in the 100 meter hurdles. Bergstrom had an
NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 2:11.10 in taking third in the 800
meters.
Other NCAA III provisional qualifying times turned in by the Calvin women
included senior Lydia Singer (Wilmington, DE/Hillcrest Academy) in the 3,000
meter steeplechase (11:13.95), senior Megann VanderVliet (Oakville, ON) in the
discus (143-7) and shot put (43-4 1/2) and junior Christina Overbeck (Seattle,
WA) in the 5,000 meter run (17:03.73).
Notable season-best efforts included Johnson in the 200 meters (26.11), senior
Katie Bolt (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the 400 meters (58.19), sophomore
Laura Jackson (Decatur, IL) in the 800 meters (2:20.28), sophomore Kelly
Edwards (Grand Blanc HS) in the 10,000 meter run (37:50.65), freshman Joy Leach
(Charlottsville, VA) in the pole vault (10-11.75), junior Rachel VanderWiele
(Holland Christian HS) in the discus (130-1), freshman Elizabeth Smit (Seattle,
WA) in the 5,000 meters (17:51.60) and sophomore Anna Pranger (Centenniel, CO)
in the 5,000 meters (17:56.02).
On the men's side, Calvin produced five NCAA III provisional qualifying
performances. Senior Todd Schuster (Denver, CO) was a part of two of them as he
clocked a provisional qualifying time of 1:51.98, just missing an automatic
qualifying mark. Schuster then ran a leg on Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team
that clocked a provisional qualifying time of 3:16.39. Also running on the
relay team were sophomore Brad Stroner (Lakewood HS) and juniors Jared Cok
(Bozeman, MT) and Joel Baker (Kalamazoo Christian HS). Calvin also had a pair
of provisional qualifying times in the distance events with sophomore Jed
Christiansen (Greenville, PA) running a provisional qualifying time of 30:40.51
in the 10,000 meters while sophomore Nate DeHaan (South Christian HS) had a
provisional qualifying time of 9:22.69 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Senior
Josh Meckes (Bay City) also had a provisional qualifying mark of 23-2 1/2 in
the long jump.
Other notable season-best efforts came from junior Jon Gries (King of Prussia,
PA) in the 10,000 meters (31:38.46), Cok in the 400 meters (48.77) and Baker in
the 200 meters (22.04).
Both Calvin teams return to action on Monday when they host Adrian and Alma in
MIAA double-dual meets scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
