KENTWOOD -- Calvin dropped a pair of games to league-leading Alma on Saturday
afternoon, falling 5-0 and 12-0. With the pair of victories, Alma wraps up the
top seed and home field advantage for next week's MIAA Tournament. Meanwhile,
Calvin (6-8 MIAA) was eliminated from contention for the four-team MIAA
Tournament as Saint Mary's clinched the fourth and final spot with a sweep over
Kalamazoo.

In Saturday's opener, Calvin freshman Leah VanEnk (Kalamazoo Christian HS) and
Alma senior Kay McDonald were locked in a scoreless pitcher's dual through five
innings. Alma (27-9, 14-2 MIAA) broke open the game however with five runs in
the top of the sixth inning. The Scots put together five hits in the frame to
break the game open.
Calvin (12-18 overall) finished the game with only four hits against McDonald
who struck out nine Calvin batters and walked only three hits. Picking up hits
for Calvin were sophomore Loren Scarbrough (Antioch, IL), senior Erin Conrad
(Calvin Christian HS), sophomore Brittany Moriarity (Muskegon Mona Shores HS)
and VanEnk. VanEnk took the loss to fall to 8-11 on the year. She finished with
three strikeouts and only one walk.

In game two, Alma sophomore pitcher Katie Koechling carried a no-hit bid into
the fifth inning before Calvin junior Cori VanKoevering (Unity Christian HS)
was able to break up the no-hitter with a bloop single to left. Koechling then
retired the next three batters to gain the mercy-rule win. Koechling struck out
11 Calvin batters and walked only one.
Calvin will close out its season on Tuesday when it hosts Adrian in a
conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.

GRAND RAPIDS - Following Friday's losses to Hope College on the road, the
rival Flying Dutchmen completed the season sweep this afternoon on Calvin's
field beating the Knights twice. With the pair of losses, the Knights fall to
12-12 in the MIAA and 12-20 overall.

In the first game, Calvin got in trouble early when Hope scored four early
runs in the top of the first inning. It was all Hope from there as the Flying
Dutchmen continued to add on to their score while keeping the Knights off the
board. Hope led 10-0 before Calvin was able to score its only run in the
bottom of the seventh. Andrew Johnson (Boise, ID/Mountain View) led off the
inning with a double and later went around to score off of a Zach Van Dyke
(Lombard, IL/Timothy Christian) single.

Jacob Vriesman (Denver, CO/Denver Christian) was an offensive bright spot for
the Knights collecting three hits in the game. Pitcher Kyle Cousins
(Holland/Holland Christian) suffered the loss lasting four innings allowing six
earned runs off of seven hits. Scott Larsen (Hastings/Hastings) and Aaron
Davis (Gaylord/Gaylord St. Mary) finished the game in relief for Cousins.

Brian Guerriero pitched his fourth win of the season for Hope.

Game two witnessed some Knight offense early on. After allowing one run in
the first inning, Calvin jumped on Hope pitcher Shawn Grose in the bottom of
the inning for five runs. Nick Caudle (Grandville/Calvin Christian) had a key
double with the bases loaded that scored a pair of runs while Alex Marcus
(Willmar, MN/Willmar Sr.), Chris Blacklidge (Comstock Park/Comstock Park), and
Mike Stob (Caledonia/South Christian) also picked up RBI's in the inning.

But Hope came right back scoring two runs in the next inning. It could have
been worse for the Knights, however, as pitcher Todd La Forest (Clio/Clio)
loaded the bases with no outs. But catcher Kyle Fletcher (Fort
Wayne,IN/Concordia Lutheran) made a sliding catch near the dugout to get the
first out and after the pair of runs scored, the Knights boasted some more
strong defense. Blacklidge made a diving stop at first base and then got the
force out at home which followed Jason May (Chicago/Watler Lutheran) diving to
his left to snag a line drive ending the inning.

The Knights continued to hold on to their lead and led 5-3 heading into the
sixth inning. Calvin was able to get a much needed insurance run when Marcus
scored after Caudle reached on an error.

But Hope fought back in the seventh. Down 6-3, the Flying Dutchmen slowly
began crawling their way back. After a confusing play involving an error in
left field, a play at the plate, and a man thrown out at second, Hope had found
a way to score the tying run. The game was tied 6-6 and was headed into extra
innings. The controversial play began with a runner on first base and one out
when a drive to deep left by Hope third basemen Joey Goeb was dropped by Caudle
on the run. Caudle was able to recover in time to make a strong relay throw to
the plate. Hope's baserunner fell down while heading home and was trapped in a
run-down. Meanwhile, Goeb had already claimed third base. A tag attempt was
made on the retreating runner and an apparent out call was made. Goeb then took
off for second and was thrown out at second. Thinking that the original runner
trapped between third and home was out, Calvin failed to cover the plate,
leaving the base wide open and allowing the lead Hope runner to run home for
the game-tying run. After a lengthy discussion, it was ruled that the lead Hope
runner was not out but had been tagged while touching third base, leaving him
safe and thus keeping the play alive after Goeb was thrown out at second base.

Rob Kool (Grand Rapids/Chrisitan) took over on the mound and pitched a
scoreless eighth inning but the wheels starting falling off in the ninth. A
pair of Calvin errors led to three Hope runs and the Knights were unable to
come back in the bottom half resulting in a 9-6 loss.

The game is being filed under protest by Calvin College.

Calvin collected ten hits in the game and squandered a couple of scoring
opportunities as they loaded the bases twice in back to back innings but were
unable to bring anybody in. Kool was given the loss giving up three runs--two
of them earned--off two hits. La Forest worked seven innings allowing four
earned runs and six total scattering eleven Hope hits. La Forest had the no
decision. For Hope, Robby Poll picked up his fourth win of the season.

Calvin's next contest will be on Tuesday against Grand Valley State
University. The game is away and is scheduled to begin at 4:00 in the
afternoon.
