MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TENNIS MIAA TOURNAMENT REPORTS

ALBION -- A dramatic three-set victory at No. 6 singles by senior Dan Volkema
Friday evening lifted the regionally-ranked Calvin men's tennis team into the
finals of the MIAA Tournament at Albion College. A graduate of Holland
Christian High School, Volkema secured a 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 victory over Dan Miller
to clinch a 5-4 Calvin MIAA Tournament semifinal victory over regionally-ranked
Albion at the Ungrodt Tennis Center.

Calvin (17-4) will face nationally-ranked Kalamazoo College (16-10) in
Saturday's championship final at noon. Kalamazoo advanced to Saturday's final
with a 7-2 semifinal victory over Hope College. Kalamazoo defeated Calvin 6-3
earlier this year.

In its match against Albion, Calvin held a 4-3 lead and was on the verge of
clinching the win when Albion's Neil Forester came from behind to defeat Calvin
junior Ricky Tilton (Gap, PA) 3-6, 7-6 (8-4), 6-4 at No. 1 singles to tie the
match 4-4. The No. 1 singles verdict shifted the focus over to No. 6 singles -
the last remaining flight of the match. Volkema then dug down in the third set
to come up with the win and clinch the match for the Knights. Calvin is now 7-2
against regionally-ranked opponents this year.

"With so much on the line, I really wanted to credit the Albion men's tennis
team not only for its effort, but also for its sportmanship," said Calvin men's
tennis coach John Ross. "I thought the sportsmanship by both teams in this
match tonight was exceptional and that's a wonderful thing to see in a
situation like this."

Earlier in the day, Calvin advanced to the semifinals with a 9-0 first round
win over Adrian. With 17 victories on the season, the Knights have now
established a single-season Calvin record for wins.
