Detroit Athletic Club Selects 2007 Michigan College Athlete of the Year Winners
DETROIT - The Detroit Athletic Club (DAC), in keeping with its longstanding
tradition of supporting athletics in the community, today announced the two
honorees for this year’s Michigan College Athlete of the Year Awards. This
prestigious honor is awarded not only for athletic ability, but also for the
academic and humanitarian efforts of college student athletes.
The winners of the second annual award are Michigan State University’s Drew
Stanton and Calvin College’s Becky Weima
Stanton, a Grand Rapids native, is well known in Michigan for leading the
Spartans football squad during his career at Michigan State. A likely draft
candidate for the National Football League, Stanton ranked among MSU’s career
leaders in completion percentage, pass completions, pass attempts, passing
yards, touchdown passes, 200-yard passing games and total offense. A 2005
academic all-American (by ESPN magazine), Stanton is working on his graduate
degree in kinesiology; he received a bachelor’s degree in 2006. He was also a
winner of the Big Ten Sportsmanship award (2005) and an honorable mention
All-Big Ten in 2004.
Weima, a native of Caledonia, finished her collegiate career as a 21-time NCAA
III All-American, including a 12-time NCAA III All-American in individual
events. A freestyle swim specialist, Weima was a five-time national champion
from 2005 to 2007. She earned six personal school records and was named the
Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s (MIAA) Most Valuable Swimmer
for four straight years. In 2006 she was named a second team Academic
All-American by ESPN magazine and maintained a 3.68 GPA while making the Calvin
College dean’s list seven times. A double major (Spanish and education), Weima
led her swim squad as captain for two years in a row.
Winners of the 2007 Michigan College Athlete of the Year Awards will be honored
during the annual Dodge National Athletic Awards, which will be held at the DAC
on Monday, May 14, 2007. The program will be televised by WDIV Channel 4 and
