GRAND RAPIDS—The softball team took a trip across town to face Aquinas in a
non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon. With a perfect first game for
Aquinas (24-16) and three Aquinas runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of
game two, Calvin took two losses and fell to 10-16 on the season.

Unable to produce any hits, Calvin was scoreless in the first game, which was
called after the fifth inning. Aquinas pitcher Alyssa Fleser (10-7) pitched a
perfect game, allowing no hits, giving up no walks, and striking out three of
the fifteen batters she faced.

The Aquinas Saints scored three runs in the bottom of the third, fourth, and
fifth innings due to some Calvin errors. The game was called with one out in
the fifth inning after an Aquinas walk-off homer that bounced off the top of
the fence brought in three runs. The losing pitcher for Calvin, sophomore
Kristin Folkerts (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) gave up zero walks and
struck out two batters.

The Knights were stronger at the plate in game two, the first hit coming off
the bat of senior Erin Conrad (Grandville/Calvin Christian)—a double in the
first inning. Both teams were scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when
Calvin managed one run as junior Cori VanKoevering (Hudsonville/Unity
Christian) hit an RBI double that scored junior Samantha Ehlert
(Rockford/Rockford) who had reached on a well-placed bunt.

After Calvin threatened to extend its lead in the top of the next inning,
Aquinas tied the game at one in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on a Calvin
throwing error with two outs.

Calvin looked to put the game away offensively in the top of the seventh,
scoring two runs off of three hits and an Aquinas throwing error. The inning
began with back-to-back singles from sophomore Loren Scarbrough (Antioch,
IL/Antioch Community) and freshman Amanda Johnson (Grand Rapids/North Pointe
Christian). Conrad’s second double of the game drove in Scarbrough and Johnson
to put Calvin up 3-1.

Four hits from the Saints in the bottom of the seventh, however, gave Aquinas
three runs, enough to take the game 4-3. Calvin’s pitcher freshman Leah VanEnk
(Portage/Kalamazoo Christian) took the loss while striking out for batters and
giving up one walk and eight hits.

The Knights return to action at home on Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. conference
double-header against Alma.
