Men's Tennis Team Picks Up Two Weekend Victories;
Track and Field Teams Compete at Jack Shaw Classic

MEN'S TENNIS

Calvin upped its record to 14-4 overall and its conference mark to 4-1 with a
9-0 victory at Adrian on Saturday morning. The Knights have a league dual match
at Alma on Monday before competing at the MIAA Tournament Friday and Saturday
at Albion College.

On Friday night, Calvin defeated regionally-ranked Coe College (IA) 6-3 in a
match played in Kalamazoo. The Knights are 5-2 against regionally-ranked teams
this year.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

 KALAMAZOO, MI--The Men's and Women's Track and Field teams took part in the
Jack Shaw Classic at Western Michigan University today. The men competed
against Aquinas and Grand Valley while the women faced Aquinas, Grand Valley,
Central Michigan, Northern Illinois, and Western Michigan.

On the women's side, Calvin took fourth place as a team behind several
provisional and automatic qualifying marks. Senior Lisa Winkle (Grand
Rapids/South Christian) had a season-best, third-place finish in the 400 meter
run (57.02) that provisionally qualifies her for the national meet. Winkle
also finished first in the long jump with an NCAA III provisional qualifying
mark of 18-11.

Sophomore Lauren Bergstrom (Rochester, MN/Rochester Century) captured first
place with a season-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 2:13.23,
finishing just two-tenths of a second ahead of GVSU's second-place finisher.
Junior Sarah Wittingen (East Grand Rapids/East Grand Rapids) finished third in
the 400 meter hurdles with a season-best and NCAA III automatic-qualifying time
of 1:01.57. Wittingen's seventh place finish in the 100 meter hurdles (14.69)
was a provisional-qualifying and season best time.

Freshmen Jourdan Johnson (Gales Ferry, CT) and Heather Koning (Kalamazoo
Christian HS) joined Winkle and Wittingen in the 1600 meter relay to take
second place with a season-best time of 3:48.89, good for an automatic bid to
nationals. Calvin's 400 meter relay team of Johnson, Winkle, Koning and
Wittingen finished second with a season-best time of 49.06.

In field events, senior Lauren Colyn (Battle Creek/Kalamazoo Christian) had a
second-place finish in the high jump (5-5 3/4) for a provisional bid.
Sophomore Julie Bratt (Lynden, WA/Lynden Christian) finished 5th in triple jump
with a season-best distance of 35-3 1/4. Senior Megann VanderVliet received
two provisional bids to the national meet with a season-best throw of 44-2 in
the shot put (4th place) and 146-10 in discus (2nd place).

Other team points came from a 6th place finish by sophomore Anna Pranger
(Centenniel, CO/Cherry Creek) in the 3000 meter run with a time of 10.33.50, a
6th place finish (4:49.96) by junior Lynn Marsh (North Vernon, IN/Jennings
County) and a seventh place finish (4:50.97) by sophomore Anne Fennema
(Brookfield, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran) in the 1500 meter run.

The men finished second with a total of 110 points, beating out Aquinas (41
points) and coming behind GVSU (152 points).

In track events, Calvin had a two-three finish in the 400 meter run with junior
Joel Baker (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) finishing second (49.80) and junior
Jared Cok (Bozeman, MT/Manhattan Christian) finishing third (49.92). Senior
Todd Schuster (Denver, CO/Denver Christian) took the 800 meter run with a time
of 1:55.85. Sophomore Erik VanKampen (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian) placed
first in the 3000 meter (8:46.45) while junior Dan VandenAkker (Grand
Rapids/South Christian) took third (8:50.65). Junior Kelby McClelland (Mercer,
PA/Mercer Area) placed third in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.14.

Calvin's 400 meter relay team placed first with a time of 42.54 while its 1600
meter relay team of Stroner, Cok, Schuster and Baker took first place with a
time of 3:19.43.

In field events, Calvin took second and third in the high jump with freshman
Caleb Rottman (Fargo,ND/Park Christian) jumping 1.77 meters and senior Eric
DeVries (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) jumping 1.72 meters. Senior Josh Meckes
(Bay City/Lutheran Westland) took first place in the long jump with a mark of
6.70 meters. Freshman Nate DeJong (Wheaton, IL/Timothy Christian) placed first
in the triple jump with a jump of 12.53 meters, while Corey Velgersdyk
(Bloomington, MN/Thomas Jefferson) took second with a 12.33 meter jump.

In the hammer throw, senior Ryan Jensen (Northview HS) had a season-best and
NCAA III provisional qualifying mark of 169-7. He also had a throw of 140-3 in
the discus.

Calvin returns to action next weekend as it travels to Hillsdale College for
the Gina Relays, scheduled for Thursday-Saturday, April 26-28.
