BASEBALL
Olivet – The Calvin baseball team has won four games in a row after winning
two games at Olivet on Saturday. Calvin took each game of the season series
from the Comets, winning Saturday by scores of 16-8 and 10-3 (8 innings).
Additionally, the Knights have won seven out of their last eight games since
ending a six-game losing streak.
In game one, Calvin’s offense came to life early and often against the
Comets. The first batter of the game, sophomore Josh Vriesman (Denver, CO)
smashed a home run to left field to set the tone for the game. Junior Kyle
Fletcher added an RBI single in the first to get Calvin a 2-0 lead.
The second inning put Calvin out of the Comet’s sights as the Knights scored
six runs. Freshman Matt Schepel (GR Christian) singled in two runs before
Fletcher continued his good day with a home run to center, his third of the
year. Senior Eric Boer (GR Christian) finished the scoring in the inning with
an RBI double.
Calvin added four runs in the fourth as Schepel and sophomore Chris Blacklidge
(Comstock Park) had RBI singles. Freshman Zach Van Dyke (Lombard, IL) capped
the inning with a two-run double.
Calvin finished their scoring by adding a run in the fifth on a Boer single
and three runs in the sixth on a two-run double by junior Alex Marcus (Wilmar,
MN) and a sacrifice fly by Fletcher.
The star of the offensive show in game one for the Knights was Fletcher. The
Knights catcher collected three hits and five RBI. Vriesman, Schepel, and
Marcus all collected three hits apiece while Boer and Van Dyke each had two
hits.
On the mound, sophomore Kyle Cousins (2-4) picked up the victory as he
surrendered three runs in four innings. Freshman Rob Kool (GR Christian) got
his second save of the season by lasting the final three innings. Kool gave up
five runs in his three innings.
Game two was considerably closer until the eighth inning when Calvin exploded
for seven runs in the extra frame.
Albion had jumped out to a three-run lead in the second innings and the
Knights were able to scratch away with single runs in the third, fourth, and
fifth innings. In the third, Alex Marcus hit his third home run to center to
get the Knights on the board. In the fourth, Zach Van Dyke singled and then
scored on a ground out by senior Nick Caudle (Calvin Christian), and in the
fifth, Calvin tied the score when Fletcher scored on a sacrifice fly by Van
Dyke.
The game went into extra innings and the Calvin offense came to life by
scoring seven runs on the Comets. The first run was scored on a throwing error
and Fletcher, sophomore Jason May (Chicago, IL) and junior Brad Brummel (GR
South Christian) followed with RBI singles. Vriesman hit a sacrifice fly
before Caudle finished off the inning with a two-run triple.
Fletcher again led the way for the Knights, collecting five more hits and
another RBI. Fletcher is now batting .355 after nine hits Saturday and
continues to lead the team in RBI with 26 after driving in five on the day.
Brummel had three hits in game two and Vriesman and Marcus had two hits apiece.
Caudle had three RBI in game two.
Calvin received a stellar pitching performance from sophomore Todd LaForest
(Clio, MI) in the second game. LaForest lasted seven innings while allowing
three runs on six hits. The win improves LaForest to 4-1 on the year and makes
him the new team leader in wins. Sophomore Scott Larsen (Hastings, MI) pitched
a scoreless eighth to finish the game.
With the two wins, Calvin improves to 12-8 in the MIAA and 12-16 overall.
Olivet falls to 4-13 in the MIAA and 10-16 overall. The Knights remain in 4th
place in the league.
