Men’s Tennis Moves Up Two Spots In Regional Rankings

ANGOLA, IN - Calvin (8-12 overall, 4-4 MIAA) suffered a pair of defeats this
afternoon as it visited Tri-State for a doubleheader. The Knights slipped to
8-12 overall and 4-4 in the conference. Calvin dropped the first contest 6-0
and then fell 12-1 in game two.
In the opener, Calvin was held scoreless on five hits as it was unable to
backup freshman starter Leah VanEnk (Kalamazoo Christian HS) who was given the
loss in six innings of work allowing six runs off of ten hits. Tri-State
scored the first two runs of the game in the second inning, added two more in
the fourth, and scored another pair of runs in the fifth. Junior Ruth Diemer
(McBain/McBain Northern Christian) and freshman Jennie Heidmann (Grand
Rapids/South Christian) each collected two hits in the game.
The second game was a similar story as the Knights fell behind early with
Tri-State putting six runs on the board in the second inning. Tri-State (23-5
overall, 7-1 MIAA) scored four more in the fifth and added another one in the
sixth while collecting fifteen hits in the game. Calvin's lone run came in the
third inning when after VanEnk singled and stole second base, Cori VanKoevering
(Hudsonville/Unity Christian) doubled scoring VanEnk.
Kristin Folkerts (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) pitched the second game
and suffered the loss giving up eleven earned runs. The Knights struggled on
offense collecting only three hits in the game.
Calvin will now face Albion College on Saturday at Albion for a doubleheader
scheduled to begin at 1:00 in the afternoon.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Kalamazoo 8, Calvin 1
GRAND RAPIDS – Calvin suffered an 8-1 defeat to league-leading Kalamazoo
Thursday afternoon, slipping to 7-10 overall and to 4-4 in the MIAA. Senior
Kari Lipinski (Northpointe Christian HS) picked up Calvin’s lone point with a
win at No. 1 singles.
Calvin will now break until next Wednesday when it travels to Alma for its
final conference dual match of the season. The Knights will then compete at the
MIAA Tournament on April 27 and 28 at Kalamazoo College.

MEN’S TENNIS
The Calvin men’s tennis team has moved up two spots in the latest Division III
Central Region rankings. Under the direction of head coach John Ross, the
Knights are ranked ninth in the latest set of rankings which can be found

Calvin (12-4 overall) returns to action on Friday when it faces Coe College
(IA) at 5:00 p.m. in a match scheduled to be played in Kalamazoo. Coe College
is ranked 14th in the latest set of regional rankings.
