Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader From League-Leading Adrian;
Men's Tennis Finishes GLCA Tourney With Win Over Wooster;
Track and Field Teams Have Big Performances ast Spartan Invitational

GRAND RAPIDS -- A day after dropping two games to league-leading Adrian, Calvin
returned the favor, defeating the visiting Bulldogs 11-5 and 9-7 Saturday
afternoon at Calvin Field.
In Saturday's opener, Calvin (7-15 overall, 7-7 MIAA) took a 5-3 lead with
three runs in the bottom of the fifth with freshman Matt Schepel (Grand Rapids
Christian HS) and senior Kyle Fletcher (Fort Wayne, IN) rapping RBI singles in
the rally. The Knights then put the game away with six runs in the bottom of
the sixth, using four hits and three Adrian errors to build a commanding 11-3
lead. Senior Eric Boer (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Jacob Vriesman
(Denver, CO) both had RBI singles for Calvin in the outburst.
Senior Andy Draayer (Denver, CO) went the distance for Calvin to pick up his
third victory without a defeat against MIAA competition. Draayer (3-2 overall)
struck out one and walked three in the victory. Vriesman, Schepel and Boer all
had two hits apiece while Marcus and Schepel both scored three runs.
In game two, Calvin used a dramatic come-from-behind victory, scoring seven
runs in the bottom of the sixth to overcome a 7-2 deficit. Calvin picked up
four hits and two walks in the pivotal sixth inning rally and also used a pair
of Adrian errors to scored three unearned runs. Fletcher, Vriesman and
sophomore Chris Blacklidge (Comstock Park HS) all had run-scoring singles in
the sixth.
Freshman Rob Kool (Grand Rapids Christian HS) them came on in the top of the
seventh to record his first collegiate save as he stranded a pair of
baserunners. Vriesman and Blacklidge had two hits apiece with Blacklidge also
picking up a pair or RBI's.
Sophomore Todd LaForest (Clio) was credited with the victory in relief to
improve to 2-1 on the year.
Calvin returns to action on Monday when it hosts Kalamazoo at 2:00 p.m. in a
conference doubleheader.

MEN'S TENNIS
ALBION -- Calvin closed out its run through the Great Lakes College Association
Tournament at Albion College with a 5-2 victory over the College of Wooster
Saturday afternoon. The Knights are now 11-4 heading into a key conference
match with rival Hope Tuesday afternoon.
Picking up singles victories for Calvin were junior Ricky Tilton (Gap, PA),
sophomore Marcus Zeilstra (Oakbrook, IL) and senior Rafael Siebenschein
(Lynden, WA) while Tilton and Zeilstra won at No. 1 doubles and Siebenschein
and junior Mike Goorhouse (Holland Christian HS) won at No. 2 doubles.
Tuesday's match with Hope is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
EAST LANSING -- Battling cold and windy weather conditions, the Calvin men's
and women's track and field teams still came up with several stellar
performances on Saturday at the Michigan State Spartan Invitational. In the
women's competition, junior Christina Overbeck (Seattle, WA) led the way with a
second place and NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 16:59.88 in the 5,000
meters. Overbeck was part of an impressive distance contingent for the Calvin
women as sophomore Calah Schlabach (St. Michaels, AZ) was third in the 3,000
meter steeplechase with an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 10:51.30.
Senior Lydia Singer (Wilmington, DE) also had a fifth place and NCAA III
provisional qualifying time of 11:12.60.
Senior Lisa Winkle (South Christian HS) picked up a pair of NCAA III
provisional qualifying marks, winning the 400 meters (57.56) and taking third
in the long jump (18-1 1/2).
Winkle also anchored Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team that clocked in with a
season-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 3:52.16. She was joined
on the relay by senior Katie Bolt (Grand Rapids Christian HS), sophomore Lauren
Bergstrom (Century, MN) and junior Sarah Wittingen (East Grand Rapids HS).
Bergstrom was second in the 800 meters (2:16.67).
Wittingen also had NCAA III provisional qualifying times of 14.84 in the 100
meter hurdles and 1:03.19 in the 400 meter hurdles.
Calvin's 4x100 meter relay team of freshman Jourdan Johnson (Gales Ferry, CT),
Wittingen, senior Lisa Geelhoed (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Winkle took
third with a time of 49.40. Johnson had a season-best time of 26.61 in the 200
meters while freshman Heather Koning (Kalamazoo Christian HS) had a season-best
time of 26.82 in the 200 meters.
In the high jump, Bolt and senior Lauren Colyn (Kalamazoo Christian HS) both
had NCAA III provisonal qualifying marks of 5-5. Senior Megann VanderVliet took
fifth in the shot put (42-1 1/4) and second in the discus (139-0). Sophomore
Ashley Glover (Northview HS) also had a strong mark of 122-11 in the hammer
throw.
On the men's side, sophomore Jed Christiansen (Greenville, PA) had an NCAA III
provisional qualifying time of 14:32.29 in the 5,000 meters. Juniors Joel Baker
(Kalamazoo Christian HS) and Jared Cok (Bozeman, MT) also had strong efforts in
the 400 meters with Baker taking second with a season-best time of 49.15 and
Cok taking third with a time of 49.36. In the 800 meters, senior Todd Schuster
(Denver, CO) had a solid time of 1:54.83.
Both of Calvin's relays had season-best efforts. In the 4x400 meter relay,
Calvin's quartet of sophomore Brad Stroner (Lakewood HS), Schuster, Cok and
Baker took first place with a time of 3:20.45 while its 4x100 meter relay team
had a time of 42.20.
Both Calvin track and field teams return to action on Monday when they host an
MIAA triangular with Albion and Tri-State at 2:00 p.m.
