BASEBALL DROPS TWO AT ADRIAN;
MEN'S TENNIS SPLITS AT GLCA TOURNEY

ADRIAN -- Calvin put a scare into league-leading Adrian Friday afternoon before
dropping both ends of a doubleheader at Riverside Park, falling 11-9 and 9-6.
In the opener, Calvin (5-15 overall, 5-7 MIAA) erupted for seven runs in the
first two innings to build a 7-0 lead. Senior Kyle Fletcher (Fort Wayne, IN)
drilled a two-run RBI double in the first while junior Alex Marcus (Willmar,
MN) belted a two-run homer in the second. Senior Eric Boer (Grand Rapids
Christian HS) followed with an RBI single to give the Knights a seven-run
cushion.
Adrian (14-9 overall, 10-2 MIAA) battled back however on a two-run home by
Bobby Rickstad and then scored five runs in the fifth to tie the game. Calvin
retook the lead at 9-7 on a two-run homer by Fletcher in the top of the sixth
but the Bulldogs answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning,
benefitting from three Calvin fielding errors. Calvin then put two runners on
in the seventh but could not bring home another run.
Freshman Rob Kool (Grand Rapids Christian HS) took the loss for the Knights,
coming on in relief of sophomore starter Nate Pocock (Wayland, MA) who went the
first five innings.
Fletcher led Calvin at the plate by going 3-for-4 with four RBIs while Marcus
and sophomores Chris Blacklidge (Comstock Park HS) and Jacob Vriesman (Denver,
CO) had two hits apiece.
Adam Stone picked up the win for Adrian while Rickstad was credited with a
save.
In game two, Calvin took a 6-5 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth but
Adrian scored four times in the bottom half to build a 9-6 advantage. Calvin
then placed just one runner on base in the top of the seventh before ending the
game on a fielder's choice.
Calvin outhit Adrian 13-11but its pitching staff hit five batters and also
issued five walks. Marcus collected three hits for the Knights while Blacklidge
was 2-for-3 with a triple and a double. Fletcher and Boer also had two hits
apiece. Sophomore Todd LaForest (Clio) took the loss for Calvin in relief.
The two teams are scheduled to meet in a doubleheader on Saturday at Calvin
beginning at 1:00 p.m. The twinbill will be broadcast via RealAudio through the

MEN'S TENNIS
ALBION -- Calvin split a pair of matches at the Great Lakes College Association
tournament, hosted by Albion College, defeating Oberlin (OH) 6-0 while falling
to nationally-ranked Carnegie-Mellon (PA) 5-3.
the match against Oberlin was haulted once the contest was decided although per
tournament rules, the No. 1 singles match played out to final completion.
Picking up singles victories for Calvin were junior Ricky Tilton (Gap, PA),
senior Rafael Siebenschein (Lynden, WA) and junior Mike Goorhouse (Holland
Christian HS). Calvin (10-4) also swept all three doubles points.
Against 14th-ranked Carngie-Mellon University (14-3), Calvin took two of the
three doubles points but then dropped four singles matches to seal the final
decision. Two of Calvin's singles defeats went to three sets with Tilton
dropping a tight match at No. 1 singles and sophomore Steve DeMaagd (Calvin
Christian HS) a close match at No. 4 singles. Picking up a singles victory for
Calvin was Volkema at No. 6 singles. Volkema is now 10-1 in singles play this
year.
Calvin is scheduled to return to action in the weekend tournament on Saturday
with a match against the College of Wooster at noon.
