CALVIN SPRING SPORTS UPDATE FOR MARCH 22, 2007
MEN'S TENNIS
ORLANDO, FL -- The Calvin men's tennis team picked up its fourth victory of the
young season including its second in the last three days over a
regionall-ranked opponent, downing Grinnell College (IA) 7-2 Thursday
afternoon. Calvin entered the match ranked 11th in the Central Region rankings
while Grinnell came in ranked 12th. Two days prior, Calvin had edged
13th-ranked Luther 5-4.
Now 4-1 on the year, Calvin is scheduled to face the University of Chicago,
ranked eighth in the Central Region, on Friday morning.
In Thursday's win over Grinnell, Calvin received singles victories from junoir
Ricky Tilton (Gap, PA), senior Rafael Siebenschein (Lynden, WA), junior Mike
Goorhouse (Holland Christian HS) and senior Dan Volkema (Holland Christian HS).
Siebenschein is now 5-0 in singles play this year while Volkema is 4-0.
Calvin also swept all three doubles flights with Tilton and sophomore Marcus
Zeilstra (Oak Brook, IL) teaming up for a win at No. 1 doubles, Siebenschein
and sophomore Steve DeMaagd (Calvin Christian HS) combining for a win at No. 2
doubles and senior David Sneller (Sheboygan, WI) and Volkema winning at No. 3
doubles.
Calvin is now 4-0 on its spring break trip in Orlando. The Knights also own
victories over Babson College and Illinois Wesleyan while in the sunshine
state.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
ORLANDO, FL -- A youthful Calvin women's tennis team picked up its biggest
victory of the young season, upsetting regionally-ranked Wisconsin-Eau Claire
5-4 on Thursday morning. Wisconsin-Eau Claire (13-2) entered the match ranked
13th in the Central Region rankings while Calvin (5-3 overall) was unranked.
Calvin swept the top four singles flights and also won at No. 1 doubles to
clinch the win. Picking up singles victories for the Knights were freshmen
Elizabeth Geenen (Holland Christian HS) and Rachel Strikwerda (Holland
Christian HS) as well as seniors Allyson Logan (Fort Wayne, IN) and Kari
Lipinski (Northpointe Christian HS). Lipinski and Strikwerda then picked up the
win at No. 1 doubles.
Calvin returns to action on Friday when it faces Illinois Wesleyan at 11:30
a.m.
BASEBALL
PHOENIX, AZ -- Calvin will head into its 2007 conference campaign still
searching for its first victory. On Thursday, Calvin dropped a 7-1 decision to
Eastern Connecticut State University. Calvin is now 0-8 on the year. Sophomore
Kyle Cousins (Holland Christian HS) took the loss for the Knights.
On Wednesday, Calvin dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Hamline
University (MN), falling 6-2 and 4-2. Calvin received strong pitching efforts
in both games against Hamline but could not come up with a significant
offensive rally in either game. Sophomore Nate Pocock (Wayland, MA) took the
loss in the opener despite striking out eight and walking none in six innings
of work. Calvin mustered only five hits to support Pocock with sophomore Jacob
Vriesman (Denver, CO) picking up two of the five hits.
In game two, junior Scott Larsen (Hastings HS) tossed five shutout innings but
was credited with a no-decision as Hamline came up with a three-run sixth
inning keyed by a misplayed fly ball to pull away for the lead and eventually
the win. Senior Andy Draayer (Denver, CO) took the loss for Calvin in relief.
Calvin had eight hits in the win with senior Eric Boer (Grand Rapids Christian
HS) picking up two of the hits.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Albion for a 1:00 p.m.
doubleheader that will serve as the conference openers for both teams. The game

SOFTBALL
TUCSON, AZ -- Heading into a late-night game with Pacific Lutheran University,
Calvin was 4-5 on its spring trip to Arizona. On Wednesday, Calvin dropped a
pair of games, falling 3-2 to Eastern Connecticut State and 12-2 to Waldorf
College. Calvin then defeated Morrisville College (NY) 11-3 in a game on
Thursday afternoon. Calvin's game against Pacific Lutheran University was not
scheduled to begin until 10:00 p.m. (EST) Thursday evening. A full recap of
Thursday's games against Morrisville College and Pacific Lutheran will be sent
out on Friday.
In Wednesday's loss to Eastern Connecticut State, Calvin jumped out to a 2-0
lead, using a solo home run by sophomore Loren Scarbrough (Antioch, IL) and an
RBI single by junior Cori VanKoevering (Unity Christian HS) in the third.
Eastern Connecticut State (7-0) chipped back with a run in the fourth and a
pair of go-ahead runs in the top of the seventh.
Freshman Leah VanEnk (Kalamazoo Christian HS) took the hard-luck loss for the
Knights to fall to 3-2 on the year. VanEnk struck out five and walked only one
in seven innings of work.VanEnk also helped her own cause with a pair of hits,
raising her season batting average above .300.
In the loss to Waldorf College, Calvin fell behind 9-1 after three innings.
Waldorf collected 13 hits and reaped the benefits of four Calvin errors to
score four unearned runs. Calvin had six hits in defeat with Scarbrough ripping
a double and VanEnk picking up a pair of singles. Sophomore Kristin Folkerts
(Grand Rapids Christian HS) took the loss for the Knights to fall to 0-3 on the
year.
