CALVIN SPRING SPORTS UPDATE FOR MARCH 20, 2007
MEN'S TENNIS
ORLANDO, FL -- The Calvin men's tennis team picked up a key 5-4 victory over
Luther College (IA) in a match-up of regionally-ranked teams Tuesday afternoon.
Calvin entered the match ranked 11th in the Central Region while Luther was
ranked 13th.
Calvin (2-1) was led in the win by senior Dan Volkema (Holland Christian HS)
who picked up a clutch 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 win at No. 6 singles to give Calvin a 4-2
lead heading into doubles play. With the match tied at 4-4, Volkema and senior
David Sneller (Shebogyan, WI) then teamed up for an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles to
clinch the win for the Knights.
Also picking up singles victories for Calvin were junior Ricky Tilton (Gap,
PA), sophomore Marcus Zeilstra (Oak Brook, IL) and senior Rafael Siebenschein
(Lynden, WA). On Monday, Calvin dropped Illinois Wesleyan 9-0.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday against Babson College at 11:30 a.m. The
Knights are also scheduled to face regionally-ranked Grinnell (IA) and Chicago
on Thursday and Friday respectively.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
ORLANDO, FL -- Calvin saw its four-match win streak come to an end on Tuesday
as the Knights suffered a 6-3 defeat to Luther College (IA). Calvin picked up
singles victories from freshmen Elisabeth Geenen (Holland Christian HS) and
Rachel Strikwerda (Holland Christian HS) as well as from Geenen and freshman
Rachel DeGroot (Lombard, IL) at No. 3 doubles.
On Monday night, Calvin secured a 7-2 win over Otterbein College (OH). Singles
victories came from Geenen, senior Allyson Logan (Fort Wayne, IN), Strikwerda
and DeGroot. Calvin also swept all three doubles flights to secure the win.
Calvin returns to action on Thursday when it faces Wisconsin-Eau Claire at 9:00
a.m.
SOFTBALL
TUCSON, AZ -- After three days of competition, Calvin is 3-3 on its spring trip
through the cactus state. On Tuesday, Calvin split a pair of games, defeating
St. Joseph's College (ME) 8-0 in a game shortened to five innings due to the
mercy rule and then falling to Hastings College (NE) 4-0 later in the
afternoon.
In the win over St. Joseph's, freshman Leah VanEnk (Kalamazoo Christian HS)
tossed a two-hit shutout to up her season record to 3-1. VanEnk struck out 10
batters and walked just one. Meanwhile, Calvin's offenive attack was fueled by
13 hits with junior Ruth Diemer (McBain Christian), senior Erin Conrad (Calvin
Christian HS) and junior Jalean Makedonsky (Imlay City) collecting two hits
apiece. Calvin had four extra-base hits in the win with Conrad picking up a
pair of RBIs in the win.
In the second game of the day, Hastings broke open a scoreless tie with three
runs in the fifth inning and added an insurance run in the sixth. Calvin loaded
the bases twice in the latter innings and finished the game with nine hits but
did not score as the Knights stranded 10 baserunners. Diemer, Conrad and
sophomore Jackie Paauw (Calvin Christian HS) all had two hits apiece for the
Knights in defeat.
Sophomore Kristin Folkerts (Grand Rapis Christian HS) took the loss for Calvin
to fall to 0-2 on the year. Folkerts struck out three and walked two and
allowed nine hits.
On Monday, Calvin suffered a pair of defeats, falling to North Central College
5-4 and to Manchester 8-6. In the loss to North Central, Calvin jumped out to a
4-1 lead but saw its lead vanish as the Cardinals scored a run in the sixth and
three runs in the top of the seventh. VanEnk took the loss for Calvin, Three of
the five runs scored by North Central were unearned. Freshman Jennie Heidman
(South Christian HS) and Diemer had two of Calvin's eight hits.
In the loss to Manchester, Calvin faltered in the fourth when the Spartans
scored six runs to take the lead for good. Conrad, Diemer and sophomore
Brittany Moriarity all had three hits apiece for the Maroon and Gold. All three
of Moriarity's hits were doubles.
Folkerts took the loss for Calvin, striking out two and walking four. Diemer is
currently batting .625 (10 for 15) on the spring trip while Conrad is hitting
.545 (12 for 22).
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it faces Eastern Connecticut State
in a doubleheader set to begin at 11:30 a.m. (EST).
BASEBALL
CHANDLER, AZ -- Calvin suffered its fifth consecutive defeat on Tuesday,
falling to Luther College 7-2 in a game played at the Snedigar Field Complex.
Freshman Zach VanDyke (Lombard, IL) took the loss for Calvin in his collegiate
debut but freshman Rob Kool (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was a bright spot in
defeat, scattering four hits in seven innings of long relief. Sophomore Jacob
Vriesman (Denver, CO) had two of Calvin's four hits in the loss.
On Monday, Calvin dropped both ends of a doubleheader with the University of
Chicago, falling 12-0 and 6-2. Senior Andy Draayer (Denver, CO) took the loss
in the opener while freshman Kyle Cousins (Holland Christian HS) was tagged
with the defeat in game two. In game one, freshman Matt Schepel (Grand Rapids
Christian HS) had a pair of hits. In game two, freshman Eric Boer (Grand Rapids
Christian HS) had a pair of base hits.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it faces Hamline University in a
doubleheader at 2:00 p.m. (EST). The game will be broadcast via RealAudio
