Lisa Winkle Named MIAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week;
Swim Teams Close Out Competition at Eastern Michigan Invitational;
Divers Record Strong Performances at Calvin Winter Invitational

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

For the fourth time in her collegiate career, Calvin senior Lisa Winkle has
been named MIAA Player of the Week in women's basketball. A native of Grand
Rapids and a graduate of South Christian High School, Winkle became Calvin's
all-time leading scorer and rebounder this past weekend as Calvin split a pair
of games at the CCIW/MIAA Classic.

In a 49-46 loss to host Wheaton Friday night, Winkle had 12 points and seven
rebounds. She followed with 21 points and 14 rebounds in an 83-61 victory over
Carthage on Saturday, notching her 32nd career double-double in the process.
Her Saturday performance also moved her past Kerry Walters on the Calvin career
scoring list and past Eileen Boonstra on the Calvin career rebounding list.

Winkle now has 1,353 points and 768 rebounds in her collegiate career.

On the week, Winkle was 11 of 21 from the field and 11 of 15 from the free
throw line. She also blocked three shots and collected a pair of steals.

Calvin is now 4-1 on the year and returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts
Kalamazoo at 7:30 p.m. at the Calvin Fieldhouse in the MIAA opener for the
Knights.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING

YPSILANTI -- The Eastern Michigan Invitational concluded Saturday night with
the Calvin men's swim team finishing sixth in a nine-team field with 219 points
while the Calvin women's swim team finished sixth in a 10-team field with 244.5
points. Host Eastern Michigan won the men's competition wtih 1,196.5 points
while the University of Michigan won the women's competition with 1,192 points.

In the women's competition, senior Becky Weima (Grand Rapids Christian High
School) posted NCAA III B' cut qualifying times in the 500 freestyle (5:01.92)
and in the 200 freestyle (1:52.27). Both times were season-best efforts. She
also swam the opening leg of Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team that clocked an
NCAA III B' cut qualifying time of 1:37.27. Weima had a lead-off 50 free split
of 24.33 which was also an NCAA III B' cut qualifying time. She was joined on
the relay by freshman Katie White (Grand Rapids Christian HS), sophomore Cara
VanWoerkom (Calvin Christian HS) and junior Kat Vinson (Kaneohe, HI).

In the 50 freestyle event itself, both White and Vinson just missed NCAA III B'
cut marks as both individuals had times of 24.71.

Other standout efforts for the Calvin women included:

*Senior Barbara Frazier (Placerville, CA) with a season-best time of 1:08.91 in
a 100 breaststroke time trial.

*Senior Alex Wilson (Ellsworth, OH) with a season-best time of 2:15.17 in the
200 IM and a season-best time of 4:44.26 in the 400 IM.

*Junior Stephanie Duncan (Long Grove, IL) with a season-best time of 5:19.50 in
the 500 freestyle.

*Season-best times by freshmen Libby Veldkamp (Calvin Christian HS) and Jo
VanderLinde (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the 500 freestyle with Veldkamp
coming in at 5:31.97 and Vander Linde in 5:35.18.

*A season-best time of 1:02.99 in the 100 backstroke by sophomore Jordan Scott
(Oakville, ON) in the 100 backstroke.

*A season-best time of 1:00.89 by sophomore Julie Wolfe (Westerville, OH) in
the 100 butterfly.

*A season-best time of 1:09.09 by freshman Emily Roberts (Dekalb, IL) in the
100 breaststroke. Katie White also had a time of 1:09.09 in the event which was
also a season-best effort.

In the men's competition, junior Joe Gluvers (Rocklin, CA) had a big day on
Saturday, clocking a season-best time of 4:26.54 in the 400 IM and a
season-best time of 2:04.57 in the 200 IM.

Other highlights for the Calvin men included:

*A season-best time of 52.97 by junior John Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) in the
100 butterfly.

*A season-best time of 1:46.21 by senior Peter Tuuk (Grand Rapids Christian HS)
in the 200 freestyle and a season-best time of 1:47.56 by senior Andrew
Resseguie (Holland Christian HS) in the same event.

*A season-best time of 59.18 by freshman Atticus Tatum (Grand Rapids Christian
HS) in the 100 backstroke.

*A season-best time of 4:53.84 by sophomore Keith Conrad (Wheaton, IL) in the
500 freestyle.

*A season-best time of 1:26.50 by Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team of Andrew
Resseguie, Boumgarden, Tuuk and freshman John Toll (Atlanta, GA). Resseguie led
off the relay with a 50 freestyle split of 21.73.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S DIVING

Calvin hosted the Calvin Winter Diving Invitational on Saturday at the Bergsma
Natatorium and Calvin's diving contingent posted a number of strong
performances. The competition was held in a championships style invitational
with divers attempting 11 dives instead of the six dives attempted in dual meet
competition.

In the women's competition, sophomore Erica Deur (Holland Christian HS) won
both the one-meter (430.25) and three-meter (466.50) diving competitions.
Rounding out Calvin's finishers in the women's one-meter competition were
junior Lis Beal (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in fourth place (372.90), freshman
Casey Herman (Libertyville, IL) in fifth place (364.90), junior Jeena Velzen
(Unity Christian HS) in sixth place (328.95), sophomore Bethany Kortman (Calvin
Christian HS) in seventh place (313.70) and freshman Joy Leach (Charlottsville,
VA) in eighth place (282.10).

On the three-meter board, Beal was fourth (361.45), Herman fifth (341.70),
Velzen sixth (314.80) and Kortman seventh (285.50).

On the men's side, freshman Alex Oddo (Grosse Pointe Park) was second (397.90)
on the one-meter board while freshman Sam DeBeor (Winfield, NY) was sixth
(308.50), sophomore Jordan Squires (Onsted) seventh (275.85) and sophomore
Dennis Steenbergen Aylmer, ON) (ninth (243.30).

In the three-meter competition, DeBoer was fifth (330.50), Oddo was sixth
(297.70) and Steenbergen seventh (256.45).

Calvin's men's and women's swimming and diving teams will now break until their
Christmas training trip to Coral Springs, Florida, scheduled for December
16-24. Calvin's next scheduled dual meet is slated for January 13 when both
teams host Wayne State at 1:00 p.m.
