This season, Calvin carried into the game undefeated overall and conference records and left the field the same way. Ranked third in the nation on D3kicks.com and 4th in the Coaches Top 25 Poll, the Knights are 16-0-0 overall and 7-0-0 in the MIAA.
The lone goal in the 1-0 game came in the 38th minute of play, as senior Jill Capel (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) blasted a senior Noell Berghuis (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) pass into the back of the net from just under 20 yards out. The goal was Capel’s 13th on the year.

ANGOLA, IN-Also at an away game in Indiana, the men’s soccer team came away with a much needed conference victory over host Tri-State University (3-10-2, 2-5-2 MIAA). Coming off an encouraging victory over Albion this past Wednesday, Calvin (7-5-3, 6-2-2 MIAA) wished to continue its string of wins. The Knights did so with a 2-1 score, winning on a thrilling last-minute effort this afternoon.
Standing in third place in the MIAA, Calvin out-shot Tri-State 20-9 with a 9-6 shots-on-goal margin. In the 33rd minute of play, sophomore Steve Holwerda (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) found a pass from sophomore Dan VanSlyke (Grove City, PA/Grove City) to put Calvin up 1-0.
Both teams failed to add to the score until Tri-State tied the game 1-1 with less than eight minutes to play, Kevin Wajert managing an unassisted goal.
Determined to avoid another possible tie situation, of which they have seen too many, the Knights fought to the last minute. With less than thirty seconds in regulation time, junior Jared Litty (Hudsonville/Hudsonville) converted a corner kick from freshman Blake VanWylen (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) to seal the Calvin win.
Splitting the time in goal were junior Dave Fortosis (West Chicago, IL/Wheaton Academy) who had one save, and sophomore Darrin Cline (Grandville/Grandville) who saw five shots on goal and had four saves. Tri-State’s keepers also split the time evenly and gathered seven saves.
Calvin has two conference games scheduled for next week as they host Adrian at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 24 and then host conference-rival Hope in a 2:00 game on Saturday, October 28.
