CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR OCTOBER 20, 2006
VOLLEYBALL
(Written by Annalise Venhuizen ‘08)
DECATUR, IL * Playing two matches, Calvin took part this evening in the Linda Slagell Volleyball Classic hosted by Millikin University, and in doing so extended its win streak to 13 games, improving to 22-1 on the season.
Ranked 17th in the latest Division III Coaches Top 25 Poll, the Knights faced Illinois College at 6 p.m., winning in three games (30-23, 30-13, 30-21) and then went on to defeat host Millikin in similar fashion ( 31-29, 30-25, 30-22) at 8 p.m (CST).
In the first match, Calvin amassed 43 kills while gathering 74 digs to put forth an impressive effort to overcome Illinois College. Leading Calvin was junior Molly Krikke (Greenwich, OH/South Central), who had 12 kills, four blocks, three service aces, and seven digs. Senior Katy Luimes (Caledonia, ON/Hamilton District Christian) added 10 kills and four blocks, senior Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH/Stow Munroe Falls) found nine kills, three blocks, and eleven digs, and senior Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA/Unity Christian) had eight kills and seven digs.
On defense, sophomore Lauren DeGroot (Tulare, CA/Central Valley Christian) had 16 digs while freshman Kelsey Sears (Traverse City/Traverse City West) added 13 digs. Junior setter Katie Zondervan (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian) dished out 41 assists and also had two service aces and six digs.
The match against Millikin, who is ranked seventh in its region and who recently defeated No. 24 Mount St. Joseph, proved to be more intense, but the Knights battled through the pressure to post a three-game victory. The first game was especially trying, as Millikin was relentless and the game went into extra points. Calvin then regrouped for the final two games to keep Millikin at a comfortable distance.
Zondervan had 38 assists in the match as the Knights had a combined 42 kills. Vogel led with 12, Kalb followed with nine kills, and Krikke and Luimes had eight apiece. Calvin’s strength came from the defensive back row, as the Knights collected 87 digs in the match. DeGroot led with 25 digs, Sears added 22, and Kalb had 13.
Calvin prepares for more tournament action at Millikin tomorrow, as it faces Rose-Hulman at 11 a.m. (CST) and then has a big match against No. 10 Central College of Iowa at 1 p.m. (CST).
