Calvin 1, Chicago 0

GRAND RAPIDS - Calvin, ranked third in the D3kicks.com Top 25 poll, hosted the Maroons of Chicago this afternoon in a highly anticipated non-conference match. Heading into the contest, the Knights held a 2-1 lifetime advantage over Chicago and were looking for their fifteenth win of the season.

Chicago (9-4-1) had been nationally-ranked for nearly the entire season before falling out of the rankings this week for the first time. The visiting Maroons had also earned trips to the NCAA III Tournament each of the last four seasons including a national runner-up berth in 2004 and a third place finish in 2005. During the 2005 season, Calvin traveled to Chicago for a regular season game and suffered a 4-0 defeat.

Offense was scarce in Thursday’s game as both teams had a difficult time putting together scoring opportunities. The Knights finally were able to break the scoreless tie 37 minutes into the first half when freshman reserve Natalie Veurink (Spring Lake/Western Michigan Christian) got a hold of a soft chip pass from freshman Emily Ottenhoff (Palos Heights, IL/Chicago Christian) and ripped it to the back of the net. The goal was the fifth of the year for Veurink.

Even though Calvin was able to score the only goal of the game, the Maroons outshot the Knights 7-4 in the first half and edged the Knights for a final 10-8 shot advantage. Most of Chicago’s shot attempts came from long range however. Each team applied pressure in spurts throughout the second half, but good defense by both squads squandered each and every scoring chance.

Freshman goalkeeper Alyssa Bergsma (Walker/Calvin Christian) collected two saves and in combined efforts in the second half, freshman Kayla Sulzer (St. Charles, MO/Whitfield) picked up a save of her own to record Calvin’s eleventh shutout victory of the season.

The Knights (15-0-0, 6-0-0 MIAA) return to conference action this Saturday when they travel to St. Mary’s for a 10:00 morning game.
