ALBION * Calvin stretched its win streak to four games and moved into third place in the MIAA standings in the process with a 1-0 victory at Albion’s Alumni Field Wednesday afternoon. The Calvin victory knocked regionally-ranked Albion out of a tie for first place in the MIAA standings as the Britons (9-5-1 overall) dropped to 7-2-0 in league play while Hope (8-1-0 MIAA) moved ahead with a 6-1 victory at Kalamazoo.

Calvin (7-5-3 overall, 5-2-2 MIAA) moved past Kalamazoo (5-4-0 MIAA) for third place in the league standings.

Calvin sophomore Ben Buehrle (Tri-unity Christian HS) scored the only goal of the game, converting a pass from freshman teammate Alex McKenzie (Lindenhurst, IL) just 2:15 into the contest. The goal was the second of the year for Buerle. Both goals have been game-winners and both have come against MIAA opponents.

Calvin’s defense then held fast through the rest of the match with junior goalkeeper David Fortosis (West Chicago, IL/Wheaton Academy) collecting four saves to post his second full shutout victory of the year.

Calvin held a 12-11 shots at goal advantage with Buehrle collecting four of those shots and junior Jared Litty (Hudsonville HS) two.

Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Tri-State for an MIAA contest slated to start at 2:00 p.m.

GRAND RAPIDS * With the MIAA regular season winding down, the Knights hosted the Comets of Olivet College, leaving only three conference matches to be played. Ranked 17th in the latest Division III Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, Calvin defeated the Comets (1-21, 1-12 MIAA) in three games, 30-9, 30-15, and 30-16, to improve to 20-1 overall and 13-0 MIAA records. The victory allowed Calvin to reach the 20-win plateau for the 12th consecutive year.

An Olivet 4-3 lead in game one was soon turned to a Calvin 19-6 advantage as the Knights worked hard in the front row on blocking and hitting. Helping Calvin to a 30-9 victory were multiple service aces from sophomore Lauren De Groot (Tulare, CA/Central Valley Christian).

Good blocking by the Comets in game two kept Olivet in close reach of the Knights through the first points of the game. The Comets also got a few kills in while mostly keeping within four points of Calvin, even to 16-12. Calvin then pulled away to a 24-12 lead and took the game 30-15.

Dishing out the assists that gave Calvin an early 6-1 lead was freshman setter Nora Bruskewitz (Mequon, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran), who took over for nationally-ranked setter junior Katie Zondervan (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian) in the last part of game two. Junior Molly Krikke (Greenwich, OH/South Central) was huge at the net, racking up kills and putting up blocks. Olivet kept up a strong volley that led to a 10-5 score and then closed the gap to 13-10. Calvin then extended its lead to 28-14. Calvin’s entire roster saw playing time by the end of game three, Calvin winning 30-16.

On offense, Krikke led with 17 kills and three blocks while senior Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH/Stow Munroe Falls) had 14 kills, senior Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA/Unity Christian) added nine kills, and freshman Sara Kramer (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian) had five kills and three blocks. Zondervan gave out 26 assists, and Bruskewitz put up 17.

Leading with digs were DeGroot with eight digs, while junior Sarah Ernst (Fort Wayne, IN/Concordia Lutheran), freshman Kelsey Sears (Traverse City/Traverse City West), and Kalb had six apiece.

Calvin now prepares for a weekend tournament at the Milikin Invitational, where it will face Milikin and 10th ranked Central College of Iowa in games on Friday and Saturday. Head Coach Amber Warners looks forward to the challenge: “We will have really good competition, and it will be nice to play teams out of our region. Hopefully we will elevate our game and play even better.”
