Women’s Soccer Team Rolls to Victory Over Alma

GRAND RAPIDS * Calvin opened a busy week of action with a convincing 7-0 victory over visiting Alma Tuesday afternoon at Calvin’s Zuidema Field. Ranked third in the D3kicks.com Top-25 poll and fourth in the National Soccer Coaches Association Division III poll, Calvin (14-0-0 overall, 6-0-0 MIAA) scored goals on its first three shots of the game, taking a 3-0 lead just six minutes in.
Calvin extended its lead to 5-0 at the break and added two more in the second half. The victory keeps Calvin atop the MIAA standings as the Knights have an eight-point lead over Adrian, Hope and Saint Mary’s which are now locked in a three-way tie for second place.
Seven different players scored goals for Calvin on Tuesday and six players collected assists. Seniors Jill Capel (Unity Christian HS), Noel Berghuis (Unity Christian HS) and Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo Christian HS) along with sophomore Elizabeth Ribbens (Tinley Park, IL) all had a goal and an assist in the win. Also scoring goals were senior Laura Rooks (Holland Christian HS), sophomore Liz VanRees (Western Michigan Christian HS) and freshman Natalie Veurink (Western Michigan Christian HS).
Also picking up assists were sophomore Ashley Bolen (Urbana, IL) and sophomore Michelle Koele (Denver, CO).
Three Calvin goalkeepers combined on the shutout victory as freshman Alyssa Bergsma (Calvin Christian HS) went the first 32 minutes followed by freshman Lynae Steketee (Holland Christian HS) over the next 39 with freshman Kayla Sulzer (St. Charles, MO) playing the final 19 minutes. Bergsma had one save in goal while Sulzer had two.
Calvin outshot Alma 24-3. The Knights have now posted six consecutive shutout victories.
The Knights return to action on Thursday when they host the University of Chicago in a key non-conference game. Chicago has been nationally-ranked for most of the 2006 season and handed Calvin a 4-0 defeat a year ago. Calvin then swings back into action on Saturday when it travels to Saint Mary’s for a key conference match, scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
