Calvin 3, Adrian 0 (30-21, 30-20, 30-25)
GRAND RAPIDS * Undefeated in the MIAA conference, Calvin had a crucial match this evening against third-place Adrian (12-7, 7-3 MIAA), who proved to be a challenge for the Knights, but not a match, as Calvin (18-1, 11-0 MIAA) was victorious in three games, 30-21, 30-20, 30-25.
In the first game, Adrian took an early 6-3 lead as Calvin appeared a little uneasy from the start. The Knights then heated up to a 12-9 lead with crucial kills by seniors Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA/Unity Christian) and Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH/Stow Munroe Falls) and freshman Sara Kramer (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian). Vogel, who had double-digit kills in the first game, fittingly ended the game with a kill, Calvin winning 30-21.
Scoring was even through the beginning of the second game, Adrian keeping within one or two points of Calvin until the Knights rallied to a 16-8 lead. Adrian did not let the Knights pull away, getting within five at 21-16 and 25-20. Calvin ended the game, 30-20, with a huge block followed by a slide kill from junior Molly Krikke (Greenwich, OH/South Central) and a service ace from freshman Kelsey Sears (Traverse City/Traverse City West).
Adrian had the upper hand in the opening of the game. Krikke’s blocks and kills were part of what kept Calvin alive, and she finally put Calvin in the lead with a service ace, making the score 14-13. A second Krikke ace put the Knights ahead 17-13. Calvin kept distance from the Bulldogs with a strong offense with a strong offense and defense, but then allowed five straight points to let Adrian within four, 28-24. A Vogel kill brought the run to and end, and Calvin took the game 30-25.
Head Coach Amber Warners commented that the key to the Knight’s win was that “tonight and every night they play every point for every point. They came ready to play. Lorilyn played very relaxed tonight and was having fun, which is key for her.” When asked about Sears’ contributions on defense, Warners said, “What Kelsey does so well is that she’s so quick. She has a tendency to take the tips and convert them into good passes.”
Sears led the Calvin defense with 14 digs, while nationally-ranked setter junior Katie Zondervan (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian) had nine digs in addition to her 50 assists. Krikke also added eight digs, two service aces, and 14 kills. Kalb added 14 kills and two service aces as well as six digs. Vogel led Calvin in kills with 18. Calvin amassed 57 kills while allowing only 38 from Adrian.
Calvin looks to extend its undefeated conference record next Friday night at Hope, who is ranked second in the MIAA. The match will start at 6:30 p.m.

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Calvin Teams Take Second at Michigan Intercollegiates
BIG RAPIDS * The nationally-ranked Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams had a busy afternoon at the Michigan Intercollegiates on Friday afternoon, hosted by Ferris State University on the Katke Golf Course.
Combined, the two Calvin teams ran in four races with the Calvin men competing in the 4K and 8K (men’s) races and the women competing in the 4K and 6K (women’s races).
Both 4K races provided exciting head-to-head match-ups between Calvin and Division II Grand Valley State. The Calvin men came in ranked number-one in the latest Division III poll while the Grand Valley State men came in ranked number-four in the most recent Division II poll. On the women’s side, Calvin came in ranked sixth (Division III) while Grand Valley State came in ranked second (Division II).
Grand Valley State came away with the victory in both the men’s and women’s races behind stellar efforts. In the men’s 4K race, Grand Valley State edged Calvin for the win, scoring 25 points to Calvin’s 28. In the women’s 4K race, Grand Valley posted a first place score of 24 points with Calvin taking second with 40 points.
In the men’s 4K race, Grand Valley placed three runners in the top seven (only four score in a 4K race) and four in the top 12 while Calvin had four in the top 10 but only one in the top five. Grand Valley’s Nate Peck took first place honors with a time of 11:40. Calvin’s top finisher was senior Tim Finnegan (Los Alamos, NM) with a fourth place time of 11:59 while Calvin sophomore Jed Christiansen (Greenville, PA) was sixth in a time of 20:01. Junior Tad Hulst (Zeeland HS) was next for the Knights in ninth place (12:06) while junior Jon Gries (King of Prussia, PA) was 10th (12:07). Rounding out Calvin’s top seven were senior Harrison Jorritsma in 13th place (12:13) and sophomore Erik VanKampen (Elmhurst, IL) in 18th (12:22).
In the women’s 4K race, Grand Valley placed three runners in the top five to pull away for the win. Grand Valley State’s Laura Aderman won the race in a time of 14:10. Calvin did put five runners in the top 13 with its top finisher sophomore Christina Overbeck (Seattle, WA) eighth with a time of 14:36 followed by senior Camille Medema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) ninth in a time of 14:39. Calvin’s next three finishers ran in a tight pack for much of the race with sophomore Lauren Bergstrom (Rochester, MN) finishing 11th (14:45), sophomore Calah Schlabach (St. Michael’s, Arizona) 12th (14:46) and senior Lydia Singer (Wilmington, DE) 13th (14:56). Rounding out Calvin’s top seven were senior Laura Holtrop (Rockville, MD) in 23rd (15:10) and sophomore Anna Pranger (Centenniel, CO) in 38th (15:32). Sophomore Jessi Hale (Rehoboth, NM) was next for the Knights, finishing 43rd with a time of 15:34.
In the men’s 8K race, several Calvin runners had strong efforts in helping the Knights take fourth with a team score of 113 points. Wayne State took first place with 18 points. Junior Dan VandenAkker (South Christian HS) had a superb effort, placing 12th with a time of 25:19. Equally impressive was the performance of senior Tyler Zwagerman (Holland Christian HS) who finished 17th in a time of 25:28. The race was the first of the year for Zwagerman who had missed the opening month of the season with an injury. Sophomore Andrew Stutzman (Kutztown, PA) also had a solid race, finishing 23rd in a time of 25:46. Other Calvin finishers included sophomore Jared Eliason (Shoreview, MN) in 28th (25:54), junior Peter Clemo (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in 33rd (26:14), freshman Kyle Mast (Holland Christian HS) in 43rd (26:29) and sophomore Sawyer Koops (Dolores, CO) in 48th (26:35).
Wayne State’s Abdullah Saleh won the race in a time of 24:14.
In the women’s 6K race, a miscommunication in directions caused the field of runners to run the course nearly a kilometer short of the scheduled distance, thus leading to quick times.
Grand Valley won the race with a team score of 40 points while Central Michigan was second with 46 points. Calvin took fourth with 103 points.
Wayne State’s Rachelle Malette won the race in a time of 18:51.4.
Sophomore Kelly Edwards (Grand Blanc HS) had a solid race, finishing 15th in a time of 20:03 while junior Lynn Marsh (North Vernon, IN) was 17th for Calvin in a time of 20:13. Freshman Mary Tolsma (Hawthorne, NJ) followed Marsh closely throughout the race, placing 20th in a time of 20:17.
Rounding out Calvin’s finishers were freshman Liz Smit (Kirkland, WA) in 25th, freshman Sarah Dugan (Freeland HS) 26th (20:36), sophomore Emily Arkus (Tinley Park, IL) in 36th (21:07) and senior Melissa Vanden Berg (Grand Rapids Christian HS) 42nd in 21:28.
Both Calvin cross country teams will now prepare to compete in the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Invitational on Saturday, October 15.
