WOMEN’S SOCCER
Calvin 3, Hope 0
After battling rival Hope for nearly 70 minutes of scoreless soccer on the Buys Athletic Field pitch, Calvin struck quickly and struck often.
Scoring three goals in a span of six minutes late in the second half, Calvin recorded an exciting 3-0 victory at rival Hope Saturday afternoon to improve to 12-0-0 overall and to 4-0-0 in the MIAA.
Ranked sixth in the Division III Coaches’ Poll and fifth in the D3kicks.com Top-25 poll, Calvin struggled to break a tie against a determined Hope College team searching for its first conference victory.
Both teams had a handful of quality scoring chances in the first half with Calvin nearly connecting in the opening five minutes on a 20-yard blast by senior Leah Scholten (Unity Christian HS) that hit the cross-bar while Hope’s Lindsey Cole had a pair of first half shots that just missed their mark. Hope sophomore Allie VanBeek also came close in the first half, nearly connecting on a cross into the Calvin box.
Calvin held a 7-4 shots at goal advantage in the first half however and continued to pressure in the second half. The Knights finally broke through with 20:09 left in regulation as sophomore Juliana Litts (Alexandria, VA) broke free up the right sideline and lofted a well-placed chip to the left side of the box. Calvin senior Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo Christian HS) was able to collect the chip, take a quick dribble and then crank a left-footed shot that sailed just inside the far right post, giving the Knights a 1-0 lead.
Two-and-a-half minutes later, Weesies was on the attack again, sending a crossing pass into the box, right to the feet of Scholten. With a small space to work with, the 5-4 Scholten whirled and fired a left-footed shot that knuckled over the goalkeeper’s hands and into the net, giving Calvin a 2-0 advantage. Weesies was credited with an assist on the play and in doing so, moved past Tara Dyk (Wegner) and into first place on the Calvin career list for assists. The assist by Weesies was the 44th assist of her Calvin career.
With 14:15 left to play, Calvin senior Jill Capel (Unity Christian HS) got into the scoring column, taking a pass from sophomore Elizabeth Ribbens (Tinley Park, IL) and whipping a left-footed shot that slammed into the back of the net, completing the scoring.
Calvin finished the game with a 14-8 shots at goal advantage. Freshman goalkeepers Alyssa Bergsma (Calvin Christian HS) and Kayla Sulzer (St. Louis, MO) combined on the shutout in goal for the Knights with Bergsma collecting one save and Sulzer two saves.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it journeys to Adrian for a 4:00 p.m. match.

GRAND RAPIDS - The Knights were looking to get back on the winning track this afternoon as they hosted the Hornets of Kalamazoo. Coming off a tough 4-2 loss to Hope last Wednesday, Calvin needed this win.
Calvin did not take much time to get on the board when sophomore Dan VanSlyke (Grove City, PA/Grove City) scored his first collegiate goal within the first minute of the game off of a nice cross feed from Ben Buehrle (Wyoming/Tri-Unity Christian). Ten minutes later, Alex McKenzie (Lindenhurst, IL/Antioch) added another when he took the ball from Luke Holtrop (Hudsonville/Unity Christian), faked around the goalkeeper, and knocked it just inside the right post.
But Calvin’s 2-0 lead did not last long. Three minutes following Calvin’s second goal, Kalamazoo got on the board via the foot of Yoshihiro Takeda. Going into halftime, the Knights held a 2-1 advantage.
As the second half unfolded, Calvin was doing its best to hold on. A couple of huge saves*one from keeper Dave Fortosis (West Chicago, IL/Wheaton Academy) and the other from teammate Zac DiPaolo (Silver Lake, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Acad.)*helped cement the victory for Calvin. Fortosis made a great diving save 15 minutes in and towards the end of the game, Fortosis left the net as the ball dribbled through but DiPaolo was there to blast it out.
Calvin added an insurance goal with just over 20 minutes in regulation from McKenzie*his second score of the game*while the assist was given to Nathan Kooi (Lynden, WA/Lynden Christian).
Calvin edged the Hornets in shots leading 13-12 while Fortosis picked up three saves.
The Knights (4-5-3, 2-2-2 MIAA) will travel to Olivet on Tuesday afternoon for a 2:00 game.
