Men’s Soccer Clipped By Hope;
Men’s Golf Fourth at MIAA Outing #7 – Remains in Fifth Place in Overall Standings

MEN’S SOCCER
Hope 4, Calvin 2

HOLLAND – Capitalizing on its scoring opportunities, Hope handed visiting Calvin a 4-2 defeat Thursday afternoon at the Buys Athletic Complex. Calvin held an 18-14 shots at goal advantage including an 11-7 shots on goal advantage. Hope scored on two of its first three shots however to take an early 2-0 lead.

Patrick McMahon put Hope on the board in the 19th minute, heading in a corner kick from teammate Dan Tresslar. Seven minutes later, Hope’s Jack Abe broke free up the right wing and slipped a low shot just inside the far post to give the Flying Dutchmen (6-4-0 overall, 4-1-0 MIAA) a 2-0 lead.

Calvin (3-5-3 overall, 1-2-2 MIAA) came back to cut the deficit in half with a goal by freshman Alex McKenzie (Antioch, IL) in the 29th minute of play. McKenzie shook loose for the goal on a nifty move up the right wing and then beat a charging goalkeeper with a low hard shot. The goal was the first of McKenzie’s collegiate career.

Calvin continued to press in the opening 20 minutes of the second half but Hope senior goalkeeper Michael Ammerman was able to come up with several strong saves.

Hope then put the game out of reach, scoring a pair of goals just three minutes apart with Tresslar scoring in the 71st minutes and Joey Orr in the 74th minute. Calvin did manage to score a final goal with four seconds remaining as senior David Holwerda (Grand Rapids Christian HS) banged in a rebound shot originally struck by junior Jared Litty (Hudsonville HS).

Ammerman finished the game with nine saves while senior David Fortosis (West Chicago, IL) had three saves for the Knights.

Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Kalamazoo at 2:00 p.m.
