CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2006

VOLLEYBALL
Calvin 3, St. Mary’s 0 (30-16, 30-19, 30-19)

GRAND RAPIDS * Having recently moved into 19th place on the AVCA NCAA Division III Top 25 Poll, Calvin is the team to beat in the MIAA conference. The Knights were again able to extend their undefeated streak in the conference this evening as the Belles of St. Mary’s (12-6, 5-4 MIAA) could not get a strong enough handle on Calvin (17-1, 10-0), who won the match in three games, 30-16, 30-19, 30-19.

Things went smoothly in favor of Calvin through the first and most of the second games. However, the Knights ran into some trouble at the end of the second, having a hard time scoring game point. Though Calvin came out strong in the beginning of the third game, St. Mary’s took a 10-8 lead after a series of Calvin errors. St. Mary’s also held a two-point lead at 12-10. Head Coach Amber Warners attributes the struggle to “brief mental lapses that resulted in too many unforced errors. Our passing was not quite up to where it should be and in turn, the hitting was affected. St. Mary’s also did a good job of placing the ball where we had holes.”

The break-through for Calvin included two big blocks by junior Molly Krikke (Greenwich, OH/South Central) which put Calvin in the lead 13-12. Calvin then pulled away to the 30-19 win. Krikke tallied up four blocks this evening while having nine kills.

Senior Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH/Stow Munroe Falls) gave the Belles’ defense a hard time this evening, hitting 15 strong kills while also playing some defense of her own, gathering 10 digs. Senior Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA/Unity Christian) had nine kills, and senior Katy Luimes (Caledonia, ON/Hamilton District Christian) added seven and four blocks.

Junior Katie Zondervan (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian), who leads the NCAA Division III in assists-per-game (14.48, not including tonight’s statistics), had 38 assists in the three games.

Leading Calvin’s defense were sophomore libero Lauren DeGroot (Tulare, CA/Central Valley Christian) with 18 digs and freshman Kelsey Sears (Traverse City/Traverse City West) with 13 digs.

Heading into a stretch of crucial conference games, Calvin will face Adrian College, ranked third in the conference, at home on Friday at 6:30 p.m. and will travel to second-place Hope next Friday.
