GRAND RAPIDS - Calvin came into Saturday’s conference match ranked 11th in the d3kicks.com poll and remained unbeaten defeating Kalamazoo College 3-0 at Calvin’s Zuidema Field. Calvin improved its overall record to 9-0-0 and conference record to 1-0-0.
It was a highly defensive match and neither team was able to get much going in the beginning of the first half. Kalamazoo did a nice job dropping defenders back to counter all of Calvin’s attacks. But senior Jill Capel (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) broke the scoreless tie at the 40:37 mark as she was able to knock a shot in off of an assist by sophomore Juliana Litts (Alexandria, VA/Thomas Jefferson).
Capel then added her second goal of the game and eighth of the year just before halftime off of a beautiful set-up by senior Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian). The goal sent Calvin into a 2-0 halftime lead.
With 10 minutes to go in the game, the Knights received another insurance goal off the foot of Weesies giving her nine on the season. The assist on the play was awarded to freshman Natalie Veurink (Spring Lake/Western Michigan Christian).
The Knights outshot the Hornets 27-10 and 14-3 on goal. Goalkeeper Alyssa Bergsma (Grandville/Calvin Christian) collected a pair of saves and Kayla Sulzer (St. Charles, MO/Whitfield) picked up one. Lynae Steketee (Holland/Holland Christian) then finished off the game and the shutout for Calvin.
Calvin will play host to conference foe Albion next on Wednesday. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 in the afternoon.

MEN’S SOCCER
Albion 3, Calvin 1
GRAND RAPIDS * With momentum on its side, Calvin appeared poised to strike for a come-from-behind win in the closing minutes of its conference match with Albion. But in an instant, the visiting Britons turned the tables and came away with a dramatic 3-1 victory.
Albion senior David Knox provided the late dramatics for the Britons, scoring a pair goals in the final eight minutes of regulation. The first goal from Knox came with 7:39 left in regulation as the senior striker collected a loose ball deep in the Calvin zone, moved from right to left and ripped a 25-yard strike that deflected off a Calvin defender and over the grasp of Calvin goalkeeper Matt Gardner (Worthington, OH). With Calvin pressing forward, Knox then took a lead pass in the final minute of play and got loose for a breakaway up the left wing, sliding a shot just inside the near post with 26 seconds remaining.
Albion (4-3-1 overall, 2-0-0 MIAA) took a 1-0 lead on a goal by senior Bryan Hayes in the 23rd minute of play but Calvin (3-4-1 overall, 1-1-0 MIAA) came back to tie the game on a free kick from 30-yards out by junior Jared Litty (Hudsonville HS) with 16:48 left in regulation.
Calvin then began to mount another offensive attack and nearly scored on a header by senior Maurice Wright (Wauwatosa, WI) with 8:37 left on the clock. Moments later however, Albion came back with a quick counterattack with Knox capitalizing on the play to put the Britons up 2-1.
Wright had a stellar effort for Calvin in defeat, ripping off four shots at goal while also playing solid defense from his stopper-back position.
Calvin finished with a slim 12-9 shots at goal advantage. Gardner finished with three saves for the Knights while Dan Putman had five saves for the Britons.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Tri-State at 4:00 p.m. in a conference match.

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
(Written by Annalise VenHuizen ’08)
HOLLAND - Each season, the MIAA Jamboree results give teams an early
feel of where they stand in the conference. Today, the Calvin teams
came away with a clear picture of their potential as both the men and
women placed first, each Calvin team taking eight out of the top ten
spots.
Though running on a water-logged course that made for a slightly slower
race, the men finished with a perfect score of 15 by sweeping first
through fifth. Senior Tim Finnegan (Los Alamos, NM/home school) was
the first to cross the finish line at 25:53. Second and third were
sophomore Jed Christiansen (Greenville, PA/Greenville) and junior Jon
Gries (King of Prussia, PA/Upper Merion) with times of 25:59 and 26:00,
respectively. Round out the top five for Calvin and finishing fourth
and fifth were senior Harrison Jorritsma (Beamsville, OH/Smithville
District Christian) in 26:05 and junior Tad Hulst (Zeeland/Zeeland)
with a time of 26:12.
Coach Brian Diemer was pleased with the pack running of the top five,
the same strategy used in last week’s Calvin College Invitational:
“It’s really nice to do that two weeks in a row,” said Diemer “That kind of running
shows maturity and real determination to set the standard and the tone
for the season.
‘Not only did the top five use that strategy, but
there were a lot of packs throughout,” continued Diemer. “I was impressed
with each runner because I saw the power of encouragement.”
The second pack for Calvin finished seventh, eighth, and tenth, allowing
the Knights to capture eight out of the top ten spots, though only five
count towards the final score. Sophomore Nate DeHaan (Byron
Center/South Christian) was seventh with a time of 26:54, sophomore
Erik VanKampen (Elmhurst/Timothy Christian) finished in 26:55 for
eighth place, and senior Jesse Kleinjan (Chino, CA/Ontario Christian),
who according to Diemer ran a very powerful race, finished in 27:17 for
tenth place.
The women also finished in impressive fashion with a team score of 16.
Winning the women’s race was senior Camille Medema (Grand
Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) with a time of 19:15. Sophomore Anna
Pranger (Centenniel, CO/Cherry Creek) finished second in 19:20. Close
behind for third and fourth were junior Christina Overbeck (Seattle,
WA/Bellevue Christian) and sophomore Lauren Bergstrom (Rochester,
MN/Century) with times of 19:21 and 19:24, respectively.
Also placing in the top ten were senior Laura Holtrop (Rockville,
MD/Chapelgate Christian Academy) in 19:54 for sixth place, sophomore
Calah Schlabach (St. Michaels, AZ/St. Michaels) with a 19:58 seventh
place finish, and senior Lydia Singer (Wilmington, DE/Hillcrest Academy
[Nigeria]) and junior Lynn Marsh (North Vernon, IN/Jennings) in ninth
and tenth, both with times of 20:05.
Commenting on the women’s race, Diemer said, “Wow, what an amazing
show. They are just learning how to run in a pack with the leaders of
the pack running behind encouraging the back of the pack to stay with
them for as long as they can. It’s counter-intuitive, but the
encouragement is needed to get the best performance.?
The teams will compete again next Friday in the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Indiana.
