Kristen Kalb Named MIAA Volleyball Player of the Week;
Ricky Tilton Reaches Semifinals of ITA Regional Tennis Tournament

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

For the second time in her collegiate career, Calvin senior Kristen Kalb has been named MIAA Player of the Week in women’s volleyball. A native of Stow, Ohio and a graduate of Munroe Falls High School, Kalb averaged five kills and three digs per game in victories over Hope, Olivet and St. Mary’s last week. In a four-game win over Hope last Tuesday, Kalb chalked up 26 kills and collected 15 digs.

Kalb currently leads the MIAA in kills-per-game (4.79) and she is eighth in hitting percentage (.282).

Kalb has helped Calvin jump out to a 13-1 overall record and a 6-0 conference mark. The Knights are also ranked 24th in the latest AVCA Division III Top-25 poll and are in the national rankings for the first time since the pre-season poll of the 2000 season.

Calvin returns to action on Tuesday night when it hosts the Britons of Albion at 6:30 p.m.

MEN’S TENNIS

ST. LOUIS, MO * Calvin College junior Ricky Tilton became the first player in Calvin men’s tennis history to reach the semifinal round of the ITA Division III Central Region Tournament this past weekend. Seeded 11th in a field of 64 players, Tilton advanced to the semifinal round with victories over Charlie Howard of Washington University (MO), John Schlotz of Hope and Sean Stewart of Kenyon. Tilton then fell in the semifinals to top-seeded Evan Webeler of DePauw 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals. Webeler continued on to win the singles tournament with a three-set win over Charlie Cutler of Washington University (MO).

Also competing for Calvin in singles play were junior Michael Goorhouse (Holland Christian HS) and sophomore Marcus Zeilstra (Hinsdale, IL). Zeilstra reached the round of 32 with a first round victory over Matt Wise of Kalamazoo.

In doubles play, Calvin had two tandems reach the round of 16. Senior Rafael Siebenschein (Lynden, WA) and Goorhouse along with the team of senior Ryan Sneller (Sheboygan, WI) and senior Dan Volkema (Holland Christian HS) both reached the round of 16. Tilton and Zeilstra also teamed up and were able to advance to the round of 32.
