MEN’S GOLF
BATTLE CREEK – Though the weather for this afternoon’s MIAA golf outing was less than ideal due to heavy rains, the men completed the eighteen holes. The second MIAA outing of the year was hosted by Olivet at Bedford Valley Golf Course.
After this second round of conference play, Calvin moves up two spots to 5th place, seeing 12 fewer strokes than it did five days ago in the first round hosted by Albion. Calvin has amassed 646 strokes in MIAA play. Hope remains in first place with a total of 592, but shared first place today with host Olivet College.
Leading Calvin was sophomore Brad Tindall (Vicksburg/Vicksburg), who had a final score of 76. Freshman Davis Moes (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) was close behind with an ending mark of 78 strokes. In a three-way tie for first place were Alma’s Kyle Travis, Hope’s Matt Lapham, and Tri-State’s Josh Bickel, who each completed the course with a 73.

VOLLEYBALL
Calvin 3, Alma 1 (35-33, 30-18, 29-31, 30-20)
ALMA – Having not won a match at Alma since 2000, the Knights had a prime opportunity tonight to demonstrate their renewed depth and strength.
A year ago a loss against Alma (1-1 MIAA), always a top team in the conference, figured in to Calvin’s strong 13-3 MIAA record. This year, Calvin (7-0, 3-0 MIAA) stepped up to the challenge, though not without battling through a first game that went into extra points and bowing out to the Scots in the third game.
After struggling to come away with the first game, the Knights dominated the second, winning with a much larger margin. Alma came back with enough determination in the third set to prevent the Knights from a three-game sweep. Calvin played a fourth game that mirrored the second, allowing for a ten-point advantage to seal the win.
A strong Knight offense included an 18-kill contribution by senior Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH/Stow Munroe Falls), 17 kills from senior Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA/Unity Christian), 15 from senior Katy Luimes (Caledonia, ON/Hamilton District Christian), and another 10 from junior Molly Krikke (Greenwich, OH/South Central).
On defense, sophomore libero Lauren DeGroot (Tulare, CA/Central Valley Christian) amassed 30 digs, while Kalb added 28 more. The Knight defense allowed Alma only 55 kills out of 193 attempts, while Calvin managed 67 kills in 177 attempts.
Junior setter Katie Zondervan (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian) had a season-high 61 assists for Calvin.
Hoping to continue its winning streak, Calvin will participate in the Wittenberg Border Battle tournament this Friday and Saturday, September 15 and 16. The Knights will open the tournament on Friday with a match against Denison and then face third-ranked Wittenberg later Friday night. On Saturday, Calvin is scheduled to face nationally-ranked Ohio Northern and also Capital. Ohio Nothern and Capital along with Wittenberg participated in the 2005 NCAA III Tournament.
