CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13TH 2006
WOMEN’S SOCCER
ALBION- The Calvin women’s soccer team stayed undefeated by beating Albion College 4-0 on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference match. Calvin (5-0-0) scored two goals in each half on their way to shutting out the Britons of Albion (4-2-0). As part of the new schedule this year in the MIAA this year, Calvin will play three non-league games against traditional league opponents.
Senior Jill Capel (Unity Christian) started the scoring in the 20th minute when she headed in a corner kick from teammate Leah Scholten (Unity Christian). The goal was Capel’s fourth of the young season.
Senior Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo Christian) netted the next two goals for Calvin, scoring an unassisted tally during the 29th minute followed by a goal in the 51st minute off a pass from sophomore Elizabeth Ribbens (Tinley Park, IL). Weesies leads the team with seven goals on the season.
Nine minutes later, sophomore Michelle Koele (Denver, CO) finished the scoring by taking a Capel pass and knocking it past Albion goalkeeper Caitlin Bowman for her 2nd goal of the season.
Capel (64 goals) and Weesies (63 goals) sit third and fourth respectively in all-time goals at Calvin. The duo is also third and fourth in points all-time with Capel at 167 points and Weesies at 161 points.
Freshman goalkeeper Alyssa Bergsma (Calvin Christian) went the first half for Calvin without facing a shot and fellow freshman Kayla Sulzer (St. Charles, MO) played the second half and made two saves.
Calvin’s next game is September 15th in the Penn-State Behrend Tournament against Westminster at 5:00PM.
WOMEN’S GOLF
OLIVET- The first MIAA outing of the year was postponed due to poor weather conditions on Wednesday. The match will be made up on September 22nd as part of the Olivet Invite.
