CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2006

WOMEN’S SOCCER

BIG RAPIDS*The Knights completed a successful away campaign this evening by defeating Ferris State University 3-1, a win that allowed Calvin to remain undefeated with a 3-0 record.

Ferris State (2-2) scored first in the match, twenty minutes into the second half after a first half that was not short of shots by both teams. Calvin freshman goal keeper Alyssa Bergsma (Walker/Calvin Christian) gathered four saves before half time as Ferris saw fourteen shots that did not result in a goal. Ferris keeper Carla Gilbertson, who guarded the net all game, also grabbed four saves in the first half.

Ferris’ Tammy Unsworth ended the scoring draught as she snuck one past freshman keeper Kayla Sulzer (St. Charles, MO/Whitfield), who took over net duties at the half. Sulzer had two saves in the last 45 minutes.

The lead lasted for less than two minutes as Calvin freshman Emily Ottenhof (Palos Heights, IL/Chicago Christian) sunk a shot from the side of the box off a feed from senior Jill Capel (Hudsonville/Unity Christian). In the 79th minute, Capel came up with a goal of her own, a header assisted by senior Leah Scholten (Hudsonville/Unity Christian). With her second goal on the year, Capel brought the Knights to a 2-1 lead.

With a mere 20 seconds left on the clock, senior Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) put the Knights out of reach with a break-away goal from a sophomore Elizabeth Ribbens (Tinley Park, IL/Victor J. Andrew) pass through the Ferris defense. The goal is Weesies’ fifth for 2006.

Overall, Ferris out-shot Calvin 26-19, though only seven of Ferris’ shots were on goal while Calvin was more accurate with 12 shots on goal.

Calvin plays its home opener this Friday, September 8, at 4:00 p.m. against Ohio Wesleyan.
