CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 6, 2006

Volleyball Opens MIAA Campaign With Win at Tri-State;
Women’s Golf Falls to Aquinas in Non-Conference Match

VOLLEYBALL
Calvin 3, Tri-State 1 (30-26, 30-18, 27-30, 30-25)

ANGOLA, IN * Calvin opened its MIAA campaign with a win at Tri-State University Wednesday night, defeating the host Thunder 30-26, 30-18, 27-30, 30-25. The Knights (5-0) remain undefeated overall on the season.

As it did a year ago in a late October visit to the Calvin Fieldhouse, Tri-State made the Knights work, extending the match to four games with a gritty game three win.

Calvin’s offensive attack up front proved to be the difference however as junior middle hitter Molly Krikke (Greenwich, OH) led four Knights in double-figures in kills with 21. Krikke also posted an impressive .425 attack percentage and chalked up three blocks.

Senior Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA) also had 13 kills and four blocks while senior Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH) had 11 kills and seven digs and senior Katy Luimes (Caledonia, ON) 10 kills and a match-high nine blocks.

Junior setter Katie Zondervan (Lakewood, CA) had 48 assists and 12 digs while Calvin’s back row of sophomore Lauren DeGroot (Tulare, CA) and Kelsey Sears (Traverse City West HS) was again busy with DeGroot collecting a match-high 24 digs and Sears 14 digs.

Tri-State’s Sallie Richardson was strong in the back for the Thunder, racking up 23 digs while Emily Vedder had 13 kills in the front row.

Wednesday’s match was part of an 11-match road swing to open the season for Calvin as it will travel to Adrian on Friday, journey to Alma on Tuesday, September 12, and then participate at the rugged Wittenberg Border Battle September 15 and 16.
