CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 2, 2006 (PART TWO)

WOMEN’S SOCCER
Calvin 2, Illinois Wesleyan 1.

BLOOMINGTON, IL * In the title game at the two-day Titan Soccer Classic, Calvin (2-0) faced a strong host Illinois Wesleyan team which overcame Hope 2-1 last evening. Calvin’s 4-1 win over Elmhurst yesterday propelled the Knights into a 2-1 win against a team that also saw time in last season’s NCAA Tournament.

Though most of the first half passed away without any goals, sophomore Elizabeth Ribbens (Tinley Park, IL/Victor J. Andrew) saw a close shot in the ninth minute that hit off the goal post. Illinois Wesleyan’s Lyndsay O’Brian did find the back of the net in the 33rd minute of play, putting the Titans up 1-0, a score that remained at half time.

Eager to win the title game, Calvin stepped up in the second half, scoring two goals less than two minutes apart in the first four minutes of play. Ribbens scored off of a pass my senior Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) and then Weesies followed with an unassisted goal of her own to seal the Calvin 2-1 win.

Calvin freshman goal keepers Alyssa Bergsma (Walker/Calvin Christian) and Kayla Sulzer (St. Charles, MO/Whitfield) split the time tonight with Bergsma gathering two saves in the first half and Sulzer scooping up one in the second half to keep the Knights ahead.

Calvin had six shots on goal while IWU had four shots on goal and four saves.

Calvin will play one more game on the road on Tuesday, September 5 at Ferris State before its home opener on Friday, September 8 at 4:00 pm against Ohio Wesleyan.
