MEN’S SOCCER
Calvin 1, Goshen 0
GRAND RAPIDS - A late second half goal by senior David Holwerda propelled the Calvin men’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over visiting Goshen College Saturday afternoon in a second round game of the Dr. Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament. A senior forward from Grand Rapids Christian High School, Holwerda scored the game-winner in the 77th minute of play, after collecting a lead pass by sophomore Anthony Gratson (Rochester Stoney Creek HS). The goal was Holwerda’s team-leading third tally of the young season.
Holwerda nearly gave Calvin a 2-0 lead moments later after receiving a chip into the box from sophomore teammate Zac DiPaolo (Silver Lake, OH) and blasting a point-blank shot that was deflected by hard-charging Goshen goalkeeper Brandon Wenger.
Calvin was able to make the one-goal lead hold up however as sophomore goalkeeper Matt Gardner (Worthington, OH) picked up his second collegiate shutout victory.
Calvin held a 19-6 shots at goal advantage including a 10-2 advantage in the second half.
The Calvin victory also puts the Knights in good position to claim the tournament championship which acts as an exchange tournament with Hope. Hope defeated Muskingum College 1-0 in overtime on Saturday. The final tournament title is based on won-loss record and in the event of a tie in won-loss record, is determined on total overall goal differential in the tournament. Calvin defeated Muskingum 5-2 on Friday. Hope will host Goshen on Monday. Hope will need to beat Goshen by three goals to share the tournament crown with Calvin and by four goals or more to win the tournament title outright.
Calvin returns to action next Friday night when it travels to non-conference rival Wheaton (IL) for a game slated to start at 8:00 pm (EST) at Wheaton’s East McCully Stadium.
