MEN’S SOCCER
Calvin 5, Muskingum 2
GRAND RAPIDS - Calvin’s offense was in high gear in a season-opening 5-2 victory over Muskingum College Friday afternoon in the first round of the Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament.
Senior David Holwerda (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Jared Litty (Hudsonville HS) notched two goals apiece in leading Calvin to the victory while sophomore Dan VanSlyke (Grove City, PA) also popped in the first collegiate goal of his varsity career.
Holwerda put Calvin on the board with a pair of goals just 10 minutes apart midway through the second half with senior Maurice Wright (Wauwatosa, WI) drawing an assist on goal number one and sophomore Anthony Gratson (Rochester Stoney Creek HS) an assist on goal number two. Litty gave Calvin a 3-0 lead shortly before halftime, beating the goalkeeper for a ball in the box threaded to him by senior teammate Nathan Kooi (Lynden, WA). Faced with a narrow angle to shoot from the far left point of the box, Litty whirled and snuck the ball just inside the far post.
After Muskingum scored on a scramble play in the 67th minute, VanSlyke broke free up the left wing on a lead pass by Litty and fired a bullet inside the far post. Litty then collected his second goal on a 25-yard blast in the 75th minute off a feed by sophomore Dave Sandberg (Northpointe Christian HS). Muskingum added a goal in the closing minutes on a breakaway by Zack Zealer.
Calvin finished the game with an 18-13 shots at goal advantage. Junior Matt Gardner (Worthington, OH) went the first 75 minutes in goal for Calvin, collecting three saves while freshman Tim Jelsema (Calvin Christian HS) went the final 15 minutes and was busy, collecting four saves.
The tournament continues on Saturday as Muskingum will travel to Hope for a 2:00 p.m. contest while Calvin will host Goshen at 2:00 p.m. Hope will then host Goshen on Monday at 4:00 p.m. on the tournament’s final day of competition.

Freshman Natalie Veurink (Western Michigan Christian HS) put Calvin on the board with a goal in the 24th minute, converting a well-placed pass by sophomore Elizabeth Ribbens (Tinley Park, IL). Ribbens then set up Weesies for a goal in the 38th minute which proved to the game-winner.
