Meckes Brothers Sparkle At Aquinas Twilight Invitational;
Lacrosse Team Falls in OT in National Tournament Opener

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

GRAND RAPIDS * It was a quite a day for Josh and Nate Meckes at the Aquinas College Twilight Invitational held Wednesday at Houseman Field on the north side of Grand Rapids.

Together, the two brothers combined for three NCAA III automatic qualifying performances including a pair of season-best marks. A junior from Bay City, Josh Meckes got the meet off to a roaring start for the Knights by cranking out a first place leap of 24-2 in the long jump. The jump is an NCAA III automatic qualifying mark and was just a half-inch off the school record of 24-2 ½ set by J.D. Stien in 1995. It also ranks as the third-best jump in NCAA III track and field this spring.

Older brother Nate then captured the discus competition with an NCAA III automatic qualifying throw of 184-6 that was his best throw of the season and also ranks as the second-best mark in NCAA III track and field this spring. He finished off the meet by winning the shot put with an impressive NCAA III automatic qualifying mark of 58-3 ½.

In the women’s shot put, Calvin junior Megann VanderVliet (Oakville, ON) also had a big meet, winning the competition with a season-best and strong NCAA III provisional qualifying mark of 45-0 ¾.

Another field event highlight came in the men’s high jump as freshman Michael Buist (Calvin Christian HS) came up with a career-best and strong NCAA III provisional qualifying jump of 6-8 ¼. In the men’s hammer throw, sophomore Ryan Jensen (Grand Rapids Northview HS) had the second-best throw of his career, ripping off a toss of 175-3. In the women’s hammer throw, freshman Ashley Glover (Grand Rapids Northview HS) whipped out a throw of 130-6.

In the women’s long jump, junior Lisa Winkle (South Christian HS) led the way with a first place leap of 18-2 ½ with senior Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) following with a leap of 17-8 ¾; freshman Julie Bratt (Lynden, WA) coming in at 17-7; junior Kelly Zwier (Kalamazoo Christian HS) jumping 16-11 ¼ and junior Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA) jumping 16-4 ½.

Vogel then won the triple jump with a leap of 37-1 ½ that was the second-best jump of her career. Senior Missy Smith (Grand Rapids Christian HS) won the pole vault (12-0 ¼) while junior Valerie Thompson (Franklin, MA) had a season-best vault of 10-10. In the men’s pole vault, senior Brian DeKorne (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Mike Vandenberg (Grand Rapids Christian HS) had solid afternoons with DeKorne coming up with a vault of 13-9 while Vandenberg came in at 13-0.

Other notable efforts included junior Katie Bolt (Grand Rapids Christian HS) winning the high jump (5-6) with junior teammate Lauren Colyn (Kalamazoo Christian HS) second (5-4). Bolt also took second in the 400 meters (58.65) while freshman teammate Jennifer DeFauw (Grosse Pointe Woods HS) was third (58.95). Sophomore Kelby McClelland (Mercer, PA) was third in the 110 high hurdles (15.32) and first in the 400 meter hurdles (56.51). Sophomore Sarah Wittingen (East Grand Rapids HS) was third in the 100 meter hurdles (14.63).

In the men’s 4x400 meter relay, the Calvin quartet of junior Todd Schuster (Denver, CO), sophomore Jared Cok (Bozeman, MT), senior Chris Friebel (Fairborn, OH) and sophomore Joel Baker (Kalamazoo Christian HS) clocked in with a season-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 3:15.41.

Other notable efforts included a career best time of 2:00.41 by freshman Joel Holtrop (Calvin Christian HS) in the 800 meters and a career-best time of 15:58.5 by freshman Matt Logan (Fort Wayne, IN) in the 5,000 meters.

A number of Calvin track and field athletes will compete at the Dr. Keeler Invitational hosted by North Central College on Thursday and Friday.

MEN’S CLUB LACROSSE

DALLAS, TX * For the second consecutive year, the Calvin men’s lacrosse team suffered a heart-breaking overtime defeat in its opening game in the national tournament. A year ago, Calvin dropped an 8-7 overtime defeat to Utah State. On Wednesday, Calvin dropped a 7-6 overtime decision to the University of Northern Colorado at the United States Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates B Tournament..

Calvin trailed 5-1 and later 6-3 heading into the fourth and final quarter of play. The Knights (12-8) then rallied with three fourth quarter goals with sophomore Ben Lo Cascio (Chicago, IL) scoring the game-tying goal with just 1:06 left in regulation. Northern Colorado countered with a game-winning goal with 4:04 left in the first sudden-death overtime period.

Calvin also received goals from junior Joel Kamstra (Calvin Christian HS), freshman Lucas Huyser-Wierenga (Edmonton, AB), senior Nick Good (Dayton, OH), senior Dan Hase (Chicago, IL), junior Jimmy Deterding (Annapolis, MD). Deterding also collected a pair of assists.

Calvin will play a consolation round game later this week.
