Calvin Sports Report for May 10, 2006
Jeanne Cole Named to All-MIAA Softball Team
Calvin College senior Jeanne Cole has joined a select group of MIAA softball
players.
A native of Fountain, Michigan, and a graduate of Mason County Eastern High
School, Cole has been named to the All-MIAA first team in softball for the
fourth consecutive year. Cole is just the sixth individual in MIAA softball
history to receive All-MIAA first team honors four straight years. Cole is also
the second player from Calvin to do so, joining Shauna Koolhaas who was a
four-time All-MIAA first team selection from 1995-to-1998.
A shortstop, Cole batted .340 in league play this year, collecting 16 hits in
47 trips to the plate despite battling injuries. In overall games Cole batted
.352 with 19 RBI's and 17 runs scored. She also collected 13 extra-base hits
including a pair of home runs.
Cole finished her Calvin career as the school's all-time leader in hits
(167) and runs scored (106). She also finished with a career batting average of
.356.
Three Calvin players also received honorable mention recognition from the MIAA
coaches. Those three players were freshmen pitcher Kristin Folkerts (Grand
Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), junior pitcher Ruth Anna Spooner (Twin
Falls, ID/Idaho School for the Deaf) and junior outfielder Chandra Fynaardt
(Pella, IA/Pella Christian HS).
Calvin finished the 2006 season with an overall record of 13-21 and an MIAA
mark of 5-11 that placed the Knights in seventh place in the final league
standings.
