Detroit Athletic Club Selects
2006 Michigan College Athletes of the Year

Detroit - The Detroit Athletic Club (DAC), in keeping with its longstanding
tradition of supporting athletics in the community, announces the selection of
the first-ever recipients of the Michigan College Athlete of the Year award.

Two athletes were selected to receive the 2006 honor: Davis Tarwater from the
University of Michigan and Lisa Winkle from Calvin College. They will be
honored at the Dodge National Athletic awards (to benefit the March of Dimes)
on May 15 at the DAC along with the as yet unannounced Michigan High School
Athlete of the Year awards.

Tarwater and Winkle were selected by a committee of DAC members who have been
involved in amateur athletics for many years. The award honors not only
athletic achievement, but academic work and community service.

Davis Tarwater has been one of U-M's top swimmers over the past four years,
claiming six Big Ten titles in the 200 butterfly and as a part of the 800
freestyle relay. He is the Big Ten and U-M record holder in the 100 butterfly,
200 butterfly and 800 freestyle relay. He also holds school records in the 400
freestyle relay, 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay. Tarwater is a
three-time NCAA national champion and a three-time NCAA All-American. He is a
two-time U.S. National champion (2005) and finished fourth at the 2005 World
Championships in the 200 butterfly. He finished fourth at the 2004 U.S. Olympic
trials and was a member of Team USA at the 2003 Pan-American Games and the 2001
Goodwill Games.
Tarwater is Michigan's 2006 Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor recipient, a
prestigious award honoring proficiency in scholarship and athletics. He is a
three-time Academic All-Big

Ten Conference and three-time U-M Athletic Academic Achievement award. He is
C.S. Mott Children's Hospital volunteer.

Lisa Winkle has competed for Calvin in both basketball and track and field for
the past four years. She is the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association
(MIAA) co-MVP in basketball (2006) and has been All-MIAA First Team for three
years. In 2005 Winkle made the All-MIAA team in track and field and was the
MIAA long jump champion that same year. She has also been an All-American as
part of Calvin's 400 relay and 100 relay teams (2004 and 2005) and earned
All-America honors from Women's DIII News and D3hoops.com for basketball.

Winkle is fourth overall in career scoring at Calvin (1,273 points) and third
for career rebounding with 720 rebounds. A two-time national qualified in track
and field, she posted the ninth best time in the 400 meters at the 2005
national meet.

On the academic front Winkle is a two-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor
Roll, a five-time member of the Calvin Dean's List and was named in 2005 to
the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan Academic All-State Collegiate
Women's team. She volunteers as a Sunday school teacher, as a track and
basketball coach and is a middle school tutor.

The National Athletic Awards will be held at the DAC on May 15. At that time
the high school winners will also be announced.

Founded in 1887, the DAC evolved from a brotherhood of athletes and prominent
Detroit industrialists. Last year the club celebrated 90 years at the Albert
Khan-designed clubhouse on Madison Avenue. Today the DAC is home to many of the
community's business and civic leaders and includes more than 4,000 members.
