HOLLAND - Calvin picked up its first dual match victory at Hope since 1995 on
Wednesday afternoon, edging the Flying Dutch 5-4 in a match played at Hope's
16th Street Courts.

Wednesday's match featured a pair of regionally-ranked teams as Calvin (13-3
overall, 4-0 MIAA) entered the competition ranked 11th in the latest Central
Region rankings while Hope (10-9 overall, 3-2 MIAA) was ranked 19th in the
Central Region rankings.

Hope took an early lead, claiming two of the three doubles points but the
Knights took a 4-3 lead by winning three of the next four singles points. Hope
then tied the match 4-4 with a win at No. 3 singles, with only the No. 1
singles match between Calvin sophomore Ricky Tilton (Lancaster, PA) and
Hope's Dan Ruemenaap still to be decided. Tilton held a 5-4 lead in the
third and deciding set with a chance to serve for the match but Ruemenapp broke
Tilton to tie the set at 5-5. Tilton responded by breaking Ruemenaap's serve
however and then closed out the match with his own serve, winning by a score of
6-3, 2-6, 7-5.

The point by Tilton also closed out the one-point victory for Calvin, its
third one-point victory of the season including its first against an MIAA
opponent.

Wednesday's match took over five hours to complete and was Calvin's
longest of the season.

The Knights are now tied for first place with nationally-ranked Kalamazoo in
the MIAA dual match standings at 4-0 in league play. Calvin will travel to
11th-ranked Kalamazoo on Saturday for a match scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
The match will be one of two against nationally-ranked teams for Calvin at
Kalamazoo's Stowe Stadium courts on Saturday as the Knights will face
23rd-ranked Coe College (IA) at 1:00 p.m. in a non-conference match.

GRAND RAPIDS - The Calvin offense came alive on a summer like afternoon as
they hosted the Hornets of Kalamazoo at Calvin's Gainey Complex. Both games
ended after five innings of play due to the mercy rule as Calvin swept the
Hornets 9-1 and 13-0. Two more wins for the Knights improves their longest win
streak of the season at five.

Calvin did its damage in the second inning of the first game scoring five runs
off of Hornet pitcher Michelle Brittain who picked up the loss. The Knights
collected five singles while getting help from two Hornet errors.

The Knights scored in each of the remaining three innings. Amy Tiejema (Grand
Rapids/Calvin Christian) led Calvin with three hits, one run, and a pair of
runs batted in. Kristin Folkerts (Grand Rapids) went four strong innings to
collect her ninth win of the season allowing only a single run off of four hits
while gathering a couple strikeouts.

Calvin came out just as strong in the second game scoring four quick runs
right off the bat off of three hits. But it was the third inning that Calvin
took complete control. The Knights scored nine runs on nine base hits
including a triple by Cori VanKoevering (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) that was
blasted to right field which brought in a pair of runs.

Loren Scarbrough (Antioch, IL/North Suburban Lake) led Calvin in RBI's with
three while several Knights collected more than one base hit including Jeanne
Cole (Fountain/Mason County Eastern), Erin Conrad (Grandville/Calvin
Christian), VanKoevering, Chandra Fynaardt (Pella, IA/Pella Christian), and
Ruth Diemer (McBain/NM McBain Christian High School).

improved her record to 3-9. Amelia Barker-King for Kalamazoo got the loss in
just over three innings of work while Brittain came in to finish the game.

Calvin's (12-14, 4-4) next opponent will be Thursday afternoon at 3:30 pm

DETERS GETS ANOTHER NO-DECISION IN LAKE COUNTY CAPTAINS LOSS

EASTLAKE, OH - Another solid pitching performance brought yet another
no-decision for Calvin College graduate Jim Deters in his third outing of the
year for the Lake County Captains. Deters has started three games this year
for the Captains and all three games have ended up in no-decisions for him.

Deters (Kalamazoo Christian HS) went five innings on Tuesday night against the
visiting Lexington Legends and departed with the game tied 3-3. All three of
the runs that Deters allowed were unearned. Deters gave up four hits in five
innings of work and struck out seven batters against just one walk. Deters now
has an impressive W/IP ratio of .05 as he has issued just one walk in 17
innings of work this spring. Deters also has 19 strikeouts on the year and
lowered his season earned run average to 2.12 with Tuesday's outing.

Lexington continued on to win Tuesday night's game 4-3, scoring the go-ahead
run in the top of the sixth inning.

The Lake County Captains are a Class A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians and
compete in the South Atlantic League.
