Women's Tennis Pulls Out Thriller Over Hope:
Softball Swept by Tri-State

ROCKFORD - Calvin senior Kim Bosscher dug down for a little extra on Thursday
night and in the process, lifted the Calvin women's tennis team to a dramatic
5-4 dual match victory over rival Hope.
The match featured a pairing of regionally-ranked teams as Hope entered the
day ranked 13th in the Central Region rankings while Calvin was ranked 14th.
Thursday's match began at Calvin but moved indoors due to rain with the
doubles portion of the match partially completed. Calvin won two of the three
doubles points but Hope took three of the next four singles points to gain a
4-3 lead. Junior Allyson Logan (Fort Wayne, IN) then completed a straight sets
win at No. 5 singles to even the score at 4-4 with Bosscher's match at No. 6
singles the only one left to complete.
Trailing 3-1 in the third set, Bosscher won five of the final six games and
fought off an injury in the process to win a thriller by a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 score.
The win by Bosscher clinched the victory for the Knights and allowed them to
pull even with Hope (4-2) for fourth place in the MIAA dual match standings.
The Knights are close behind second place Kalamazoo and St. Mary's which are
both 5-2 in league play. Bosscher now has a 14-2 singles record at No. 6
singles this year. Junior Kari Lipinski (Northpointe Christian HS) also picked
up a win for Calvin at No. 4 singles on Thursday. Lipinski and senior Annie
Huizenga (Unity Christian HS) also teamed up for a win at No. 2 doubles while
Bosscher and Logan were victorious at No. 3 doubles.
In addition, Calvin is now 10-7 overall and has reached the double-digit
plateau in victories for the third straight year.
Calvin travels to St. Mary's on Saturday for a key conference match and will
also face Indiana Wesleyan in a non-conference match at the St. Mary's courts.

GRAND RAPIDS - Calvin's five-game win streak came to an end as visiting
Tri-State swept a doubleheader from Calvin on Thursday afternoon at the Gainey
Athletic Complex, winning by scores of 10-7 and 4-0.
In the opener, Tri-State (17-17 overall, 5-5 MIAA) collected 10 hits and used
a key Calvin error to pull away for the win. Tri-State jumped out to a 3-0
lead but Calvin fought back with three runs in the bottom of the second to tie
the game. The Thunder then scored three times in the top of the third but
Calvin answered again, scoring three times in the bottom half to tie the game
at six.
In the top of the fourth, Tri-State took the lead for good as Rainbow
Bednarski led off with a triple and was then brought home on a bunt play by
younger sister Erica Bednarski with an errant throw sending Rainbow home.
Erica then scored on a wild pitch to give Tri-State an 8-6 advantage. The
Thunder added two insurance runs in the sixth with Calvin scoring once in the
bottom of the fourth.
Freshmen Brittany Moriarity (Muskegon Mona Shores HS), Loren Scarbrough
(Antioch, IL) and sophomore Ruth Diemer (McBain Christian HS) had two hits
apiece for Calvin with Moriarity driving in a pair of runs. Senior Jeanne Cole
(Mason County Eastern HS) also went 2-for-4 for the Knights including a
double.
Junior Ruth Anna Spooner (Twin Falls, ID) took the loss in relief of freshman
starter Kristin Folkerts (Grand Rapids Christian HS). Spooner (3-10) struck
out seven and walked one in four innings of relief.
In game two, Calvin managed just five hits off of Tri-State starter Kristen
Barron (4-7) who went the distance, striking out three and walking none.
Tri-State scored three times in the second and added another in the fourth to
seal the win.
Cole went 2-for-3 in the loss, raising her season batting average to raise her
season batting average to .385. Folkerts (9-6) took the loss, striking out one
and walking two in four innings of work with Spooner striking out three in two
innings of relief.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Albion in a doubleheader at
1:00 p.m. The twinbill will be broadcast via RealAudio through the Calvin web
