MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams used ideal weather conditions on Saturday to roll to dual meet victories over visiting Alma and Hope on Saturday afternoon. On the men's side, Calvin defeated Alma 155-28 and Hope 119.5-72.5 to improve to 4-0 in MIAA dual meet competition. On the women's side, Calvin defeated Alma 141-43 and Hope 124-67.

The highlight of the afternoon came from Calvin senior Missy Smith of Grand Rapids Christian High School in the women's pole vault. Competing against a powerful contingent of Hope pole vaulters, Smith cleared the bar at 12-7 on her third and final attempt at the height. The vault surpassed the previous Calvin record of 12-6 established by Rachel Veltkamp in 2002. Not only is her vault of 12-7 an NCAA III automatic qualifying height, but also the best vault in NCAA III women's track and field this spring. In addition, it ranks as the eighth-best vault in NCAA III women's track and field history.

Smith's junior teammate Valerie Thompson (Franklin, MA) also had a season-best performance in the pole vault, taking sixth with a vault of 10-6.

The pole vault competition was part of a spectacular day of performances for the Calvin women's track and field team. Some of the other highlights included:

*Junior Katie Bolt (Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking first place in the high jump with a season-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying mark of 5-6. Junior teammate Lauren Colyn (Kalamazoo Christian HS) was close behind with a jump of 5-4. Bolt also took first place in the 400 meters with a season-best time of 58.48.

*Sophomore Sarah Wittingen (East Grand Rapids HS) winning the 100 meter hurdles with a season-best and strong NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 14.68.

*Junior Lisa Winkle (South Christian HS) winning the long jump with an NCAA III provisional qualifying mark of 18-3 ¼ and then winning the 200 meters with a season-best time of 25.56. Winkle also anchored Calvin's 400 meter relay team to a first place and season-best time of 48.91. She was joined on the relay by junior Bethany Hofman (Holland Christian HS), Wittingen, junior Lisa Geelhoed (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Lorilyn Vogel). Winkle was part of an impressive group of long jumpers on Saturday as senior Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) took second (17-9) and junior Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA) third (17-3 ¼).

*Vogel captured the triple jump with a school-record and NCAA III provisional qualifying jump of 37-3, breaking her previous school record of 36-10 ¼. Freshman Julie Bratt (Lynden, WA) also had an impressive jump of 35-3 in taking second place.

*Other Calvin winners on Saturday included senior Camille Medema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the 1500 meters (4:45.61); freshman Jessi Miller (Colorado Springs, CO) in the 5,000 meters (19:04.6); junior Lydia Singer (Wilmington, DE) in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (11:31.97); Ashley Glover (Northview HS) in the shot put (37-10) and Calvin's quartet of Hofman, Wittingen, DeFauw and Voigel took first place in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:00.82.

On the men's side, Calvin had a strong day in the jumps. Junior Josh Meckes (Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) took first place in the long jump (22-4 ¼) and was part of a 1-2 Calvin finish in the event as sophomore Luke Allison (Lakeville, MN) was second (21-11 ½). In the triple jump, senior Tim Ziwers and Allison tied for first place with jumps of 44-6. In the high jump, freshman Michael Buist (Calvin Christian HS) took first place (6-6) while sophomore Jason Vande Kopple (Grand Rapids Christian HS) tied for second place (6-4).

Field events were a strength for the Knights as senior Nate Meckes (Westland Lutheran HS) took first place in the shot put (57-5) and in the discus (175-1) while senior Brian DeKorne (Grand Rapids Christian HS) took second in the pole vault (14-0) with freshman Michael Vanden Berg (Grand Rapids Christian HS) third (13-0). Sophomore Kelby McClelland (Mercer, PA) added a second place throw in the javelin (154-0) and later took first place in the 400 meter hurdles (57.69) and 110 meter hurdles (15.81). Junior Todd Shuster (Denver, CO) also turned in an impressive time of 3:55.73 in the 1,500 meters that was just a half-second off an NCAA III provisional qualifying time.

Other first place performances for the Calvin men included sophomore Joel Baker (Kalamazoo Christian HS) in the 200 meters (22.82); freshman Brad Stroner (Lakewood-Lake Odessa HS) in the 400 meters (50.94); freshman Jed Christiansen (Greenville, PA) in the 5,000 meters (15:20.76) and senior Harrison Jorritsma (Beamsville, ON) in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:58.35).

Calvin also took first place both relays, winning the 4x100 meter relay in 43.57 and the 4x400 meter relay in 3:20.99.

Both Calvin track and field teams will now prepare to travel to Albion next Saturday for dual meets against Albion and Olivet.

GRAND RAPIDS - Not much went right for the Knights on a sunny afternoon at Calvin's baseball field as Calvin dropped two conference games to the visiting Bulldogs of Adrian. Calvin came into the game ranked third in the conference but Adrian furthered themselves away from the pack and now sits at 14-2 in the league. With the pair of Saturday defeats, Calvin (11-16 overall, 9-7 MIAA) falls into a tie for fourth place in the MIAA standings with Alma, one game behind third place Hope.

Adrian controlled the lead most of the afternoon. Adrian added on to that lead in game one doing most of their damage in the fifth inning and at one point were ahead 8-1. The Knights got back a couple of those runs back in the bottom of the sixth but it ceased to be enough as they fell 8-3.

For the Knights, Andy Draayer (Denver/Denver Christian) pitched the whole game picking up the loss while Bobby Rickstad for the Bulldogs collected the win after seven solid innings of work.

Adrian jumped ahead early on the Knights scoring one in the second but Calvin quickly got it back scoring a run of their own in the bottom half of that inning. Kyle Fletcher (Fort Wayne, IN/Concordia Lutheran) started the inning with a double and later scored off a double ripped down to center field by Kyle Snoeyink (Grandville/Calvin Christian).

But Adrian just kept on attacking scoring two more the next inning and shut out the Knights until the fifth when after Kyle Hollemans (Kentwood/East Kentwood) doubled to right field, Mark Tigchelaar (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) knocked him in by singling to right center field.

In the bottom of the seventh, Calvin was down 4-2 and any chance for a rally fell short because they went down in order.

Winning pitcher for the Bulldogs was Adam Stone who pitched the whole game allowing two runs off of only four hits. For the Knights, the losing pitcher was freshman Kyle Cousins (Holland/Holland Christian) who gave up four runs off of eight hits while collecting three strikeouts in seven full innings.

Calvin (11-16, 9-7 MIAA) will host Grand Valley State on Monday afternoon at 4:00 pm for a non-conference contest. The Knights will return to MIAA action on Friday when they travel to Olivet for a doubleheader scheduled to start at 2:00 pm.
