ADRIAN * The Bulldogs of Adrian strengthened their grip on first place in the MIAA standings with a doubleheader sweep of Calvin Thursday afternoon at Riverside Park, winning by scores of 10-1 and 10-2.
Adrian is now 12-2 in the MIAA while Calvin slips back to 9-5, one game behind second place Albion (10-4).
In game one, Calvin took a 1-0 lead on a two-out RBI double by senior Kyle Snoeyink (Calvin Christian HS) in the top of the first inning but the Knights managed just one hit the rest of the way.
Meanwhile, Adrian (16-9 overall) rapped out nine hits and broke loose for three runs in the second and six in the fifth to put the game away.
Senior Tim Stoeffler (2-3) took the loss for Calvin, striking out two and walking four. Senior Jeff Nokovich (4-1) picked up the win for the Bulldogs, striking out eight and walking three. Alexander Younce was 2-for-3 with three RBI’s for the Bulldogs while DH Nick VanDike also had three RBI’s for Adrian.
In game two, Adrian erupted for 14 hits and scored in five of its six innings that it came to bat. Calvin managed five hits against Adrian senior starter Craig Reynolds (4-2) with senior Mark Tigchelaar (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Alex Marcus (Willmar, MN) collecting two hits apiece. Ryan Sulek led Adrian offensively by going 3-for-3 at the plate. Freshman Nate Pocock (3-3) took the loss for Calvin, striking out two and walking one in 4.2 innings of work.
Calvin and Adrian will meet again on Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Calvin Field.

ADRIAN * A 9-1 victory in the nightcap allowed Calvin (8-14 overall, 2-4 MIAA) to gain a doubleheader split at Adrian Thursday afternoon. Calvin dropped the opener 5-3 as Adrian (12-15 overall, 3-8 MIAA) scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to break a 2-2 tie.
Calvin tied the game with single runs in the fourth and fifth after Adrian took a 2-0 lead with a two-run first inning. Freshman Mallory Scholten (Grand Rapids Christian HS) drove in Calvin’s run in the fourth and senior Jeanne Cole (Mason County Eastern HS) drove in Calvin’s run in the fifth. Adrian then scored three runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth to break the deadlock. Calvin came with a single run in the seventh on a sole homerun by Cole before Adrian slammed the door shut.
Cole, freshman Brittany Moriarity (Muskegon Mona Shores HS) and sophomore Ruth Diemer (McBain Christian HS) picked up two hits apiece for Calvin as the Knights recorded 10 hits in defeat.
Junior Ruth Anna Spooner (Twin Falls, ID) took the loss for Calvin to fall to 1-9 on the year. Spooner struck out four and walked one in six innings of work.
In game two, freshman Kristin Folkerts (Grand Rapids Christian HS) picked up the win, limiting the Bulldogs to two hits as the Knights gained a mercy-rule decision.
Calvin came up with a season-high 14 hits in the game two victory with Cole and junior Erin Conrad (Calvin Christian HS) both collecting three hits. All three of Cole’s hits were doubles. Diemer also hit her first collegiate home run for the Knights and was 2-for-4 at the plate. Sophomore Cori VanKoevering (Unity Christian HS), Moriarity, Diemer and Scholten all had two hits apiece.
Calvin returns to action on Monday when it hosts Cornerstone in a non-conference doubleheader scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
