NOTRE DAME, IN * Calvin suffered a pair of conference defeats at league-leading St. Mary's Tuesday afternoon to fall to 7-13 overall including 1-3 in conference play, falling 8-7 in the opener and 3-0 in the nightcap.
In game one, Calvin was able to build a 7-5 lead but the host Belles (21-7 overall, 7-1 MIAA) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game and then plated the winning run with one out in the bottom of the seventh.
Calvin picked up 12 hits in the loss but also committed four errors which led to four unearned runs. Junior Ruth Anna Spooner (Twin Falls, ID) took the loss in relief of freshman starter Kristin Folkerts (Grand Rapids Christian HS). Senior Jeanne Cole (Mason County Eastern HS) had a big game for Calvin in defeat, going 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI's. Freshman Loren Scarbrough (Antioch, IL), Brittany Moriarity (Muskegon Mona Shores HS) and Amy Tjema (Calvin Christian HS) all had two hits apiece for the Knights.
In game two, Calvin managed just one hit against St. Mary's freshman flamethrower Kristin Amran who struck out 10 batters and faced one batter more than the minimum.
Calvin broke up Amram's no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the top of the seventh inning. St. Mary's provided Amran all the run support she would need with two runs in the third and one in the fifth.
Calvin returns to action on Thursday when it travels to Adrian for a conference doubleheader scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.

Aquinas 24, Calvin 7
GRAND RAPIDS - The Saints of Aquinas paid a visit to Calvin's home field and snapped the Knights' eight-game winning streak with a 24-7 victory as the barrage of hits by Aquinas was too much for the Knights to handle.
Aquinas started off quick with a leadoff homerun by Tim Muma that put the Saints up early and for good. Aquinas kept their bats busy and the Knights defense on their toes as they collected twenty hits throughout the afternoon off of seven different Calvin pitchers.
Even though the Knights were able to muster seven runs, their offense struggled early on. They got their first run in the second when Tim Stoeffler scored after Pieter Groot singled to right field. Groot collected a second hit later on and Mike Stob also led the Knights with two hits and a pair of runs batted in.
While seven pitchers made an appearance in today's game, Kyle Snoeyink (Grandville/Calvin Christian) picked up the loss. No pitcher went longer than Ben Buikema who pitched two innings. For Aquinas, Marc Sobota got the win after hurling six strong innings allowing two runs.
Aquinas spread out their runs scoring in every inning except for the fourth and sixth innings. All but one Saint starter collected a hit.
Calvin (11-12, 9-3 MIAA) will travel to Adrian Thursday for a doubleheader match-up. It will be a pair of big games for the Knights as Adrian sits atop the league standings.
