SOFTBALL DROPS TWO TO FERRIS STATE
(Written by Annalise VenHuizen ’08)
Ferris State 10, Calvin 1
Ferris State 6, Calvin 2
GRAND RAPIDS * The Knights dropped to a 7-11 record this afternoon after losing two games to Division II Ferris State. The Bulldogs topped Calvin 10-1 in the first game of the doubleheader, while the Knights threatened to take a victory in the second game before Ferris sealed the 6-2 win.
In game one, Ferris was the first to score as it gained one run off of two hits in the top of the third. Calvin’s first hit of the game came in the fourth inning, a single from sophomore first baseman Cori VanKoevering (Hudsonville/Unity Christian). The Knights were not able to capitalize on the hit however, and did not score until the bottom of the sixth, after Ferris State put up a huge four run, four hit inning in the top of the fifth.
Down 5-0 in the sixth, Calvin put together two hits to score a run, as freshman Lauren Scarbrough (Antioch, IL/North Suburban Lake) and junior Chandra Fynaardt (Pella, IA/Pella Christian) hit back-to-back singles. Scarbrough was able to advance to third on a ground out and a sacrifice fly to make the score 5-1.
In the top of the seventh, Ferris again went on a scoring run, making five runs off of four hits and two walks. Though senior short-stop Jeanne Cole (Fountain/Mason County Eastern) hit a single in Calvin’s half of the seventh, it produced no runs, leaving the Knights with a 10-1 loss.
Things looked a little brighter for the Knights in game two. Ferris scored one run off of three hits in the first inning, but the Knights tied it up in the bottom of the first with Cole reaching first on an error, advancing to third on a VanKoevering single, and scoring on another error that ensued during the play.
Calvin scored again in the fifth inning, when freshman Brittany Moriarity (Muskegon/Mona Shores) earned a two-out walk and then was brought in by a single from junior left fielder Erin Conrad (Grandville/Calvin Christian) and a Cole double. With Conrad on third and Cole on second, VanKoevering was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Though Calvin had a prime opportunity to distance itself from the Bulldogs, the Knights failed to do so as a ground out ending the inning. Calvin led 2-1.
After junior pitcher Ruth Anna Spooner (Twin Falls, ID/Idaho School for the Deaf) did not allow any runs in the second to sixth innings, the Knights were looking to take the game by shutting out the Bulldogs in the top of the seventh. Ferris State would not go down that easily, however, putting together five hits*a bunt, single, and two doubles*with the help of a wild pitch and two Calvin errors. Calvin had an opportunity to come back in the bottom of the seventh, as both Moriarity and Cole were walked, but did not. Ferris took the second game, 6-2.
Two of Calvin’s five hits in game two came from the bat of sophomore designated player Ruth Diemer (McBain/McBain NM Christian).
The Knights return to action on Tuesday, as they head to conference opponent Saint Mary’s for a double-header set to begin at 3:30.
BASEBALL * KYLE HOLLEMANS NAMED MIAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK
For the first time in his career, Calvin senior infielder Kyle Hollemans has been named MIAA Player of the Week. A native of Kentwood and a graduate of East Kentwood High School, Hollemans was 6-for-12 (.500) at the plate in a four-game series with Kalamazoo this past week as he collected eight RBI’s and three runs scored. Of his six hits, five were doubles as he finished the series with a slugging percentage of .917 and an on-base percentage of .538. Hollemans split time between first base, third base and at designated hitter.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Aquinas in a single non-conference game at 4:00 pm. The game will be broadcast through the Calvin web site at: http://www.calvin.edu/sports/ram/calvinsports.ram
