CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 9, 2006
MEN’S AND WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD BATTLE COLD AT BULLDOG INVITE
BIG RAPIDS * The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams battled cold and windy conditions at the Ferris State Bulldog Invitational on Saturday to record several sterling efforts. Saturday’s invitational was unscored.
On the women’s side, sophomore Sarah Wittingen (East Grand Rapids HS) had a terrific afternoon, posting NCAA III provisional qualifying times in the 100 meter hurdles (14.85) and 400 meter hurdles (1:03.47) with her time in the 400 meter hurdles good for first place. Senior Missy Smith (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was also a winner on Saturday, taking first place with an NCAA III automatic qualifying height of 12-3. Senior Camille Medema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also took home first place in the 1,500 meters with an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 4:40.67.
Other highlights for the Calvin women included:
*Junior Lisa Geelhoed (Grand Rapids Christian HS) clocking season-best times in the 100 meters (13.18) and 200 meters (26.99). Geelhoed also joined teammates Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA), Wittingen and junior Lisa Winkle (South Christian HS) in the 4x100 meter relay to finish second with a time of 49.93.
*Senior Tracy Dykstra (Unity Christian HS) clocking a season-best time in the 800 meters (2:27.92).
*Senior Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) taking third in the long jump (17-1 ½).
*Freshman Julie Bratt (Lynden, WA) and Vogel posting a 3-4 finish in the triple jump with Bratt recording a collegiate-best mark of 35-6 while Vogel had a jump of 35-0 ¼.
*Junior Megann VanderVliet (Oakville, ON) taking third in the shot put (42-1 ¼) and discus (130-8).
*Freshman Ashley Glover (Northview HS) posting a career-best mark of 119-5 in the hammer throw.
In the men’s competition, Calvin sophomore Ryan Jensen (Northview HS) reset his own school record in the hammer throw, whipping out a throw of 157-11 that easily surpassed his previous record of 150-1. Jensen has now broken the Calvin hammer throw record in three different meets this spring. Senior teammate Nate Meckes (Bay City) also had a big afternoon, winning the shot put with an NCAA III automatic qualifying mark of 58-2 ½ which ranks as the top throw in NCAA III track and field this spring. Meckes also won the discus competition with a throw of 171-7.
Younger brother Josh Meckes (Bay City) also grabbed a first place victory, winning the long jump with a leap of 22-3 3/4.
Other highlights for the Calvin men on Saturday included:
*Senior Tim Zwiers (Pella, IA) and sophomore Luka Allison (Lakeville, MN) going 1-2 in the triple jump with Zwiers winning with a mark of 45-4 ½ and Allison second with a jump of 42-4. Sophomore Brad Hoff (Pembroke, MA) also had a 40-0 leap to place fifth.
*Sophomores Joel Baker (Kalamazoo Christian HS) and Jared Cok (Bozeman, MT) went 2-3 in the 400 meters with Baker clocking in 49.38 and Cock at 49.89.
*Junior Todd Schuster (Denver, CO) taking third in the 800 meters with a season-best time of 1:57.13.
*Freshman Michael Buist (Calvin Christian HS) taking third in the high jump with a collegiate-best jump of 6-6.
*Senior Brian DeKorne (Grand Rapids Christian HS) winning the pole vault (14-0) while freshman teammate Mike Vandenberg (Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a vault of 12-6.
*Calvin’s 4x400 meter relay team of sophomore Dustin Smith (Hamilton HS), Schuster, Cok and Baker took second with a time of 3:23.30.
*Sophomore Kelby McClelland (Mercer, PA) taking second in the 110 high hurdles (15.29) and sixth in the 400 meter hurdles (57.56).
*Freshman Nate DeHaan (South Christian HS) taking sixth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a career-best time of 9:53.00.
*A 1-2-3-5 finish by Calvin in the 5,000 meters with junior Tim Finnegan (Los Alamos, NM) winning with an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 14:45.15 while senior Harrison Jorritsma (Beamsville, ON) was second with an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 14:47.11. Freshman Jed Christiansen (Greenville, PA) was third in 14:50.86 and senior Tyler Zwagerman (Holland Christian HS) fifth with a time of 14:59.10.
Both Calvin teams will now prepare to host an MIAA triangular next Saturday against Hope and Alma.
