KALAMAZOO * A two-hit shutout victory by freshman lefthander Kyle Cousins allowed Calvin to complete a four-game series sweep of Kalamazoo College and move into sole possession of second place in the MIAA standings. A graduate of Holland Christian High School, Cousins went the distance in a 2-0 win over Kalamazoo in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Kalamazoo’s Woodworth Field. Cousins struck out six batters and walked two. Calvin (11-11 overall, 9-3 MIAA) took Saturday’s opener 7-2 behind a complete-game pitching performance by senior Andy Draayer (Denver, CO).

Calvin has now won eight straight games and has hit the .500 mark overall for the first time this season. Calvin’s four-game sweep of Kalamazoo places Calvin in second place in the MIAA standings, one game ahead of third place Albion (8-4) and one game behind league-leading Adrian (10-2).

It also sets the stage for a big four-game series between Calvin and Adrian next week as the Knights will travel to Adrian on Thursday for a doubleheader (2 pm) and then return home on Saturday to host the Bulldogs in a twinbill (1 pm).

In game one on Saturday, Calvin used a four-run sixth to pull away for the win. Calvin moved out to a 3-1 lead with single runs in the first, second and fourth but then broke loose in the sixth, using two hits, two walks and an error to score four times. Senior Mark Tigchelaar (Grand Rapids Christian HS) had the big hit of the inning with a two-run RBI single.

Tigchelaar finished the game 2-for-2 at the plate with four RBI’s while freshman Jacob Vriesman (Denver, CO) also had two hits including a double. Senior Mike Aggen (Evergreen Park, IL) also had a triple and scored two runs.

Draayer (2-2) struck out two batters and walked three in seven innings of work while lowering his earned run average to 2.12.

In game two, Cousins and fellow Kalamazoo lefthander Matt Thieleman were locked in a pitcher’s duel with Cousins getting the upper hand as the Knights rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh to break a scoreless tie.

The Calvin rally began when senior Nick Caudle (Calvin Christian HS) reached base on an error and moved to third on a double by senior Kyle Hollemans (East Kentwood HS). With one out, Caudle scored on a passed ball by the catcher and moments later, Vriesman delivered a squeeze bunt that scored junior Brad Brummel (South Christian HS) from third after Brummel had entered the game to run for Hollemans.

Cousins then retired the side in order in the bottom half of the inning to run his season record to 2-1.

GRAND RAPIDS - The Knights split their twinbill with the visiting Spartans of Case Western Reserve on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at the Calvin softball field inside the Gainey Athletic Complex. Case Western (10-14-1) came into town favored to win both games but the Knights were able to walk away with a win under their belt with a first game score of 6-1 but then fell 2-1 in a nailbiter match-up in game two.

Calvin jumped off to a quick start in the first game scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning when Jeanne Cole (Fountain/Mason County Eastern) led off with a double to right field. She then came around to score when Loren Scarbrough (Antioch, IL/North Suburban Lake) knocked an RBI single to right field. Scarbrough scored later to cap off a three run inning and it put the Knights on top for good.

Calvin came back and attacked right away in the second inning again scoring two more off of three hits including a triple by Erin Conrad (Grandville/Calvin Christian).

Kristin Folkerts (Grand Rapids) for Calvin pitched a brilliant game going six innings allowing only run one off of five hits while recording a pair of strikeouts and the win. Ruth Anna Spooner (Twin Falls, ID) finished off the game pitching the last inning recording a pair of strikeouts of her own.

Case Western’s attack was led by Amanda Bell (Carroll, OH/Bishop Hartley) who had one of her team’s five hits and their only run batted in as she knocked in Carrie Casden in the top of the sixth.

The second game was a different story for the Knights as they struggled on offense. Calvin scored their one and only run in the bottom of the second when after Cori VanKoevering (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) reached on an error, sophomore Ruth Diemer (McBain/NM McBain Christian High School) sent her in to score after she belted a double to right center field.

Case Western rallied with a run of its own in the fifth and then scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh to take a 2-1 lead. Calvin’s efforts fell short in the bottom of the inning as the scoreboard read 2-1 in the Spartan’s favor.

Although Spooner started the game pitching four scoreless innings, Folkerts picked up the loss giving up two runs off of four hits. Winning pitcher for the Spartans was Ruth Sagartz who pitched to complete game one-hitter. She recorded an impressive nine strikeouts while allowing only two hits as she had completely shut down the Knight offense that was so potent in the first game.

Calvin (7-9) will look to bounce back toward the .500 mark as it takes on Ferris State this coming Monday at home in a 3:30 afternoon non-conference game.
