Tennis Teams Claim Victories in Orlando

SOFTBALL

TUCSON, AZ * A pair of standout pitching efforts propelled the Calvin women's softball team to its first two victories of the season on Monday as the Knights defeated Manchester 3-2 and William Jewell 2-0.

In the game against William Jewell, Calvin junior pitcher Ruth Anna Spooner (Twin Falls, ID) struck out a career-high 15 batters and carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Spooner settled for a two-hit shutout victory with William Jewell scratching out a hit in the sixth and also in the seventh. Calvin picked up a run in the second and an insurance marker in the sixth to provide Spooner all the run support she would need. Sophomore Cori VanKoevering (Unity Christian HS) picked up Calvin's first run by leading off the second with a triple and scoring on a one-out RBI single by junior Chandra Fynaardt (Pella, IA). In the sixth, Calvin freshman Lauren Scarbrough (Antioch, IL) reached base on a lead-off walk and later scored on a wild pitch.

The shutout victory was the fourth of Spooner's collegiate career.

In the win over Manchester, freshman Kristen Folkerts (Grand Rapids Christian HS) picked up her first collegiate victory as she nearly went the distance, scattering six hits, striking out four and walking one.

Calvin scored runs in the third, fifth and sixth while collecting eight hits. Senior Jeanne Cole (Mason County Eastern HS) put Calvin on the board with a solo home run in the third. Cole then poked a two-out double in the fifth and scored on an RBI single by sophomore Sam Ehlert (Rockford HS). In the sixth, Scarbrough reached base on an error and scored on a two-out RBI single by Fynaardt. Manchester (1-3) rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Spooner relieved Folkerts for one batter and collected a key strikeout. Folkerts then returned to the pitching circle and left the bases full with a game-ending strikeout.

Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it faces Crown College and Doane College in afternoon games.

BASEBALL

CHANDLER, AZ * Calvin split a doubleheader with the University of Chicago Monday afternoon, falling in the opener 6-3 before coming back to win the nightcap 10-2. No other details were provided by the Calvin coaching staff.

Calvin is now 1-3 on the year and returns to action on Tuesday when it faces Albright College in a twinbill slated to start at noon.
