MORE ALL-AMERICA HONORS FOR LISA WINKLE;
VELDHOUSE & HARRIS NAMED TO ALL-FRESHMEN TEAMS BY DIII NEWS/WDIII NEWS
The post-season honors continue to roll in for Calvin junior center Lisa
Winkle. The South Christian High School graduate has been named a third team
All-American by the Women's Division III Newsletter. Winkle has also been
named an honorable mention All-American by D3hoops.com as well as a first team
Great Lakes All-Region selection by D3hoops.com.
In addition, freshman teammate Marcia Harris has been named to the National
All-Freshman team by WDIII News. A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of
Grand Rapids Christian High School, Harris started in 26 of a possible 28 games
this year, averaging 13.8 points and 4.7 rebounds a game while shooting 52.7
percent from the field. Harris also averaged 2.1 assists and 1.1 steals per
game. In addition, she notched double-digits in scoring in 25 of 28 games
including a career-high 23 points in a 67-62 win over St. Mary's on January
7. She was later named to the All-MIAA first team and was the only freshmen to
receive either All-MIAA first team or second team honors. The Calvin women's
basketball team finished 23-5 this year and reached the NCAA III Tournament for
the second straight season.
On the men's side, Calvin freshman Caleb Veldhouse has been named to the
National All-Freshman team by the Men's Division III Newsletter. A native of
Sioux Falls, South Dakota and a graduate of Sioux Falls Christian High School,
Veldhouse, started in all 30 games for a Calvin team that captured its first
outright MIAA regular season title since 2002 as Knights finished 23-7 overall
and 13-1 in the MIAA. Veldhouse Averaged 13.5 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.3
assists per game while connecting on 43.4 (128-of-195) percent of his field
goal attempts, 39.6 percent (44 of 111) of his three-point field goal attempts
and 85.4 percent (105-of-123) of his free throw attempts. He also notched
double-digits in scoring 23 of 30 games and finished year with a 10-game
double-figure scoring streak. He was later named to All-MIAA first team,
becoming the only freshman (men's basketball) in the MIAA to receive either
first or second team All-MIAA honors.
Winkle, Harris and Veldhouse were part of a group of MIAA players to receive
post-season honors from DIII News and WDIII News. On the men's side,
Albion's Brandon Crawford was named a second team All-American while
Hope's Greg Immink was named a fifth team All-American. On the women's
side, Hope's Bria Ebels was named a second team All-American.
