HOCKEY TEAM ADVANCES TO SEMIFINALS OF ACHA DIVISION III TOURNAMENT
FORT MYERS, FL * The Calvin hockey team has advanced to the winner's bracket semifinals of the AHCA Division III National Tournament.
The Knights reached the semifinal round with a 6-3 quarterfinal victory over the University of Georgia Thursday afternoon. Calvin (24-4-1) will face fellow Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference foe Northwood Institute in a semifinal game Friday evening at 5:15 p.m. with Wright State set to face Penn State University-Berks in the other semifinal. Friday's winners will meet in the national championship game Saturday afternoon at 12:15 p.m.
Calvin and Georgia were tied 1-1 after one period of play with the Knights building a 4-3 lead after two periods. Calvin then scored two goals in the final period including an empty net goal by senior Dan DeKorne (Grand Rapids Christian HS).
Senior Nick VerKuyl (Whitby, ON) picked up a pair of goals for the Knights while freshman Lucas Huyser-Wierenga (Edmonton, AB), junior Nick VanSchepen and junior Bryan Bandstra (Terrace, BC) also had goals for the Knights.
Calvin held a 51-19 shots on goal advantage while sophomore goaltender John Singleton (Highlands Ranch, CO) had 16 saves for the Knights.
Calvin's Friday contest with Northwood will feature a rematch of the Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference Tournament final from two weeks ago that Calvin won by a 4-2 score. Friday's game will feature the fourth meeting between Calvin and Northwood with Calvin having won all three previous meetings.
