HOLLAND * In order to advance to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament, Calvin had to mount a team effort. The Knights (23-6) stood up to the challenge, with five Calvin players reaching double-digit scoring and with Calvin only committing a mere eight turnovers. By defeating University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (20-8) this evening with a 79-71 final score, Calvin advances to second round play where it will face rival Hope College for a record fifth time this season. Hope defeated Wisconsin Lutheran 93-51 in Friday's second first round game at the DeVos Fieldhouse.
UW-La Crosse proved an early threat to the Knights, beginning the game with an 8-0 run. Over that five minute stretch, Calvin was out-rebounded 10-1 and allowed two three-pointers and a pair of free-throws. The game drastically changed tides, however, when junior Eric DeVries (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) drew a turnover, which freshman Caleb Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD/Sioux Falls Christian) converted into a lay-up. Freshman Tyler Zoerhof (Holland/Holland Christian) then provoked another UW-L turnover and made the score 8-4 with a fast-break one-handed dunk. Jumpers from both DeVries and Zoerhof, coupled with a three-point shot by senior Kyle Trewhella (Rockford/Rockford) added up to an 11-0 Calvin run, which gave Calvin its first lead of the night, 11-8. UW-L's Marcus Conigliaro answered Trewhella's with a three-pointer to tie the game again. A free throw shot by each team brought the third and final tie, 12-12.
Though Wisconsin-LaCrosse hung close for a while, a Trewhella three at the 5:45 minute mark gave Calvin a six-point advantage. The lead collapsed to two twice, including a narrow 27-25 Calvin lead with 3:30 left in the half. UW-L remained scoreless for these last minutes of play as Calvin was able to secure a double-digit lead at the half, aided by a last-second shot by freshman Dustin Smith (Hamilton/Hamilton) that was banked from a few steps inside of the half-court line. Calvin led 35-25 at the half.
Both teams came ready to play in the second half, but UW-L struggled to dent Calvin's double-digit lead. The Eagles were making the shots, but so were the Knights. Calvin opened the half with a tight 9-5 advantage, which included three three-pointers: one from Veldhouse and two from senior Andy Draayer (Denver, CO/Denver Christian). Draayer's second three boosted Calvin's lead to 16 at 46-30. Conigliaro's third three of the game brought UW-L within 10 again, but Zoerhoff embarked on a solo 7-2 run, that included a three-pointer, two free throws, and another fast-break dunk off a steal. His efforts put Calvin ahead 55-40. Neither team was able to string together any field goals until UW-L reduced the margin to 10 again, 70-60 with just over four minutes to play. With just under thirty seconds left, the Eagles edged within seven points of Calvin. Though UW-L out-scored Calvin 46-44 in the second half and held a 47-31 rebounding advantage, time ran out on its offense, a!
nd Calvin held on to take the 79-71 victory.
High scorers for Calvin included Trewhella with 19 points, Zoerhof, who contributed a career-high 15 points, Draayer with 13 points, Veldhouse, who scored 12, and Snoeyink, who added 11 points.
Conigliaro led the Eagles in defeat with a 21-point effort that included five three-pointers. Also reaching double-digit scoring were Chris Fehrenbach with 12 points, Joe Werner with 12 points and 13 rebounds, and Luke Homan, who had 10 points.
Calvin Head Coach Kevin Vande Streek, though "disappointed with the defense and rebounding in the first five minutes of the game," he was pleased because "Andy Draayer and Kyle Trewhella had great games, and Tyler was a great spark, the wildcard." Trewhella noted the same sentiments, saying, "We had a lot of guys step up offensively."
Calvin will face Hope College tomorrow at the DeVos Fieldhouse at 7:00 p.m. This is the fourth time that the two teams will meet each other this season, with Hope holding a 2-1 season lead over Calvin. Saturday's game will mark the second time that Calvin and Hope have met four times in men's basketball in a single-season with the 1980-81 season the only other year that the two rivals have met four times in a season.
Calvin and Hope have met four prior times in NCAA III Tournament play with Calvin winning all four previous meetings.
Commenting on tomorrow's match-up, Coach Vande Streek said, "I don't think there's a more talented team in the country than Hope. But we've shown that we can play well against them, and we are going to have to do that again tomorrow night."

ST. LOUIS, MO - Carroll College Defeats Calvin College, 64-57, in NCAA First Round; Pioneers
Secure First NCAA Tournament Win in Program History
St. Louis, Mo., March 3, 2006 * Carroll College upset 17th-ranked Calvin
College, 64-57, Friday night in St. Louis for its first NCAA Tournament win
in program history. The Pioneers, who made three previous trips to the
Tournament, secured a spot in Saturday night's second-round game (7 p.m.)
Against host Washington University, a 70-58 first round winner over Manchester.
Calvin (23-5) used a 9-0 run for an early 9-2 advantage and extended to a
17-11 lead when freshman Kristi Brummel hit a three-pointer from the left
wing at the 11:59 mark. Carroll, though, responded with a 9-4 run to cut the
deficit to one point (21-20) when sophomore Kim Wickert scored after
grabbing an offensive rebound, forcing a Knights timeout. Wickert finished
the first half with eight points and seven rebounds.
Carroll then registered a 16-8 run to close out the half with a 36-29 lead.
Wickert and sophomore Crystal Hoewisch netted four points apiece during that
spree. Hoewisch netted eight points and four assists in the first half,
while senior Krista Rode added seven points. Junior Lisa Winkle started
strong for Calvin, scoring six of her eight first-half points in the opening
10 minutes of the game; she also led the Knights with six rebounds, four
assists and three blocks.
Winkle helped Calvin close the margin to two points (38-36) five minutes
into the second half. She converted a three-point play, and then scored on a
reverse lay-up with 7:50 left on the clock to make it 47-45. Calvin freshman Marcia Harris followed with a jumper in the lane to tie the game at 47. Carroll answered with a three-point basket by Hoewisch to take a 50-47 lead however and never trailed again.
Freshman Marcia Harris converted the last four baskets for Calvin and
finished with 18 points, but it was not enough. Leading 58-55 with 40
seconds to play, Carroll broke the Knights' full court-press and found
junior Kate Elwood along the right baseline for an open lay-up and a
five-point lead. Winkle drew a foul with 14 seconds remaining and drained
two free throws to cut the deficit to three points again, but Hoewisch, who
scored a game-high 20 points, sunk four clutch free throws to seal the win.
"Give a lot of credit to Carroll," said Calvin women's basketball coach John Ross. "They came out very hard, answered an early charge by our team and dictated the tempo of the game for probably the final 30 minutes. At the same time, I don't think we played up to our potential, particularly on defense. We didn't execute the fundamentals of our defense on several possessions and that forced us to play from behind. Even though we're a very young team, we've found ways this year to come up with defensive stops, make the clutch baskets and finish strong down the stretch. Tonight that didn't happen. I'm still very proud of my team for the type of season that it had but I'd like to think that this loss will provide some motivation for our players in the off-season to work that much harder."
Winkle posted 19 points and 12 rebounds to post her 30th collegiate double-double including her 16th of the season to lead Calvin. Winkle also collected five assists, four blocks and a steal while committing just two turnovers in 32 minutes of action. Winkle also Mindi Andringa on the Calvin career scoring list and into fourth place, boosting her career total to 1,271 points. Harris contributed 18 points and nine boards. Calvin senior Sarah Winkle closed out her career with two points, three steals and eight rebounds. Wickert also tallied a double-double (14 points, 12 rebounds) for Carroll, which improved to 22-4.

The meeting was the fourth of the year between the two Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference foes but this was one came with a berth in the national championship game on the line. Calvin had also won all three prior meetings with Northwood but in the fourth meeting, the Timberwolves came out on the winning end.
