Lisa Winkle Named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American

GRAND RAPIDS * Calvin College junior Lisa Winkle has been named a second team Academic All-American by ESPN The Magazine in women's basketball. Winkle has been so honored in the college division which includes schools from the NCAA II, NCAA III and NAIA ranks.

A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids South Christian High school, Winkle is the first Calvin women's basketball player to be named an Academic All-American.

A three-year starter on the Calvin women's basketball team, Winkle is averaging 15.6 points and 9.7 rebounds a game while connecting on 60.6 percent of her field goal attempts. She is currently ranked eighth nationally in field goal percentage and 24th in blocked shots per game (2.4). During the 2005-06 season, Winkle has been in double-figures in scoring in 26 of a possible 27 games and has posted 15 double-double performances. Her efforts have helped Calvin build an overall record of 23-4 and gain an at-large bid to the NCAA III Tournament.

Off the court, Winkle carries a 3.95 grade point average while majoring in mathematics and secondary education. She a five-time member of the Calvin Dean's List and a two-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll. Last spring, she was named to the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM) Academic All-State College Team.

Ranked 17th in the latest D3hoops.com poll and 14th in the latest WBCA Division III Top-25 poll, the Calvin women's basketball is scheduled to open NCAA III Tournament play in a first round game on Friday at 6:00 p.m. (EST) in a first-round game against Carroll College of Wisconsin (21-4). The game will be part of a four-team regional hosted by Washington University of St. Louis, Missouri.

The Academic All-America ® Teams program honors 816 male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of America; a 2,000-member organization consisted of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
