CALVIN SPORTS REPORT (PART TWO) FOR FEBRUARY 10, 2006

MIAA SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS REPORT (DAY TWO)

JENISON * With one day of competition left at the MIAA Swimming and Diving Championships, the Calvin women's swimming and diving team is closing in on its second straight league title. On the men's side, Calvin is in the thick of a three-way struggle for third place.

In the women's competition, Calvin built its first place total to 463.5 points, more than 140 points ahead of second place Hope. On the men's side, Hope holds a seven-point lead over Olivet with the Flying Dutchmen holding a total of 360 points. Calvin is in third place with 211 points, one point ahead of fourth place Albion and 24 points ahead of fifth place Kalamazoo.

Calvin junior Becky Weima of Grand Rapids Christian High school continued her record-setting ways by winning the 200 freestyle with a Calvin and MIAA record time of 1:49.65. Weima's performance allowed her to capture first place in the event for the third straight year. Her time was an NCAA III automatic qualifying performance and also allowed her to join a select group of individuals in NCAA III women's swimming history to clock a sub-1:50 performance in the event. Weima held the previous MIAA record in the event with a time of 1:50.57. Weima was part of a one-two Calvin finish in the event with sophomore Stephanie Duncan (Long Grove, IL) second with a time of 1:56.56.

Calvin freshman Erica Deur of Holland Christian High School also picked up her second MIAA record in as many days by winning the one-meter diving competition with a score of 451.65 points, breaking the previous MIAA mark of 447.65 set by Calvin's Sari Brummel in 1987.

Calvin junior Alex Wilson (Ellsworth, OH) also had a big performance in the 400 IM, winning the event with an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 4:38.32. Calvin also collected a plethora of points in the 100 breaststroke with junior Barbara Frazier (Placerville, CA) winning with a 1:08.61 with senior teammate Laura Miersma (Holland Christian HS) second (1:08.67) and sophomore teammate Sarah Abbot (East Grand Rapids HS) sixth (1:11.17).

Calvin also had a pair of standout relay performances as its 800 freestyle relay team of Duncan, freshman Julie Wolfe (Westerville, OH), senior Abby Johnson (Grand Haven HS) and Weima took first place with an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 7:42.60 while its 200 medley relay team of freshman Jordan Scott (Oakville, ON), Wilson, Johnson and Vinson took second with an NCAA III provisional qualifying and school record time of 1:49.12.

"Our women's team is really on a roll right now and our goal is to keep the momentum going," said Calvin head coach Dan Gelderloos. "Becky's performance in the 200 freestyle tonight was unbelievable. She's one of only two or three swimmers in Division III (women's) history to swim a time under 1:50. She continues to amaze us all."

In the men's competition, Calvin did not have any first place performances but again came up with several stellar efforts. Junior Peter Tuuk of Grand Rapids Christian High School helped lead the way with a second place time of 1:43.57 in the 200 freestyle. Tuuk then anchored Calvin's 800 freestyle relay team that took second with an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 6:57.82. Tuuk was joined on the relay team by sophomore John Boumgarden (Naperville, IL), senior Luke Bagnall (Marshalltown, IA) and junior Andrew Resseguie (Holland Christian HS).

Bagnall had a big swim in the 400 IM, taking third place with a season-best time of 4:14.02. Seeded fifth heading into the finals, Boumgarden also pulled a mild surprise in the 100 butterfly, taking third with a with a season-best time of 52.33.

"I thought our guys had a great day and rose to the occasion when they had the opportunity to," said Gelderloos. "We're swimming about as well as we can at this point. I'm not sure if that will be good enough to hang on for third place but as long as we continue to give the kind of effort that we did today, I'll be happy."
